For three generations it has been said that my g.grandmother, Victorine Louisa Scholefield came from a French family. From certificates we have found her mother to be Elizabeth, maiden name Smith - which doesn't sound French at all!! Elizabeth was born abt. 1826 in Stockport, Cheshire, and on her marriage certificate, her father is named James, (occ. illegible)
So here is the mystery - Elizabeth and Richard Scholefield had seven children, and six of them have very English names ie: Martha, Alice, Elizabeth, Mary, Annie and James Richard. So where does Victorine Louisa come from?? She was the second child, b. Ipswich, Suffolk in 1851 - if she had been the first I might have thought of more than one marriage, or an illegitimate child, but that just doesn't fit in this instance.
There is a possibility James wife was named Harriet, but nothing proven. So could someone please, please check the parish registers for Stockport (I suspect though, that is too big an undertaking) or tell me how I can search them myself? I really need answers to this mystery, which has haunted three generations, and me for most of my life.
Thanking you,
Pauline in Oz

When and where was Elizabeth married? If it was not at Stockport can you send an image to the forum or via photobucket so that we can have a look at her father's occupation.
