I am looking for my G Grandparents Robert & Eliza Carter b 1866/68 in Tolleshunt D'Arcy Essex. They are on the 1891 census as living at 136 Grafton Rd Mile End Old Town but no sign of them on the Ancestry Plus 1901 census. Their daughter Alice b 1891 in Chiswick is listed as an inmate at the poor law school in 1901 so they make be in the workhouse. Has anybody access to any records that might help? Would really appreciate it
Brenda

According to the official 1901 census site, they are in Twickenham and Alice is with them (at least that's the way it looks from the index)

How sure are you about the Alice in the workhouse school?

Eliza Carter 32 Essex Tolleshunt D Arcy Middlesex Twickenham

Robert Carter 34 Essex Tolleshunt D Arcy Middlesex Twickenham Coachman Domestic

Alice Carter 6 London Mile End Old Town Middlesex Twickenham

Hi Peter
Not 100pc sure about Alice in the poor law school. I only had parents details,Alice's age(9-10) & a family rumour that she had been brought up in a childrens home to go on to begin with. I have her death & marriage certs, married 1915 aged 24 & died aged 64 in 1956. I know she was aged 6 on your reply but I am sure this is them. On the 1891 census Robert & Eliza are on their own in Mile End Old Town apparently mis-spelt as Carker but other details are right.
Just a wee bit confused now because she couldn't be in two places at one time could she.
Not too sure where I go from here now!
Thanks
Brenda

Actually, yes she could! - at least, she could on a census return.

There are quite a few examples of people being recorded twice, both at home and a work; or at home and school; or ven at hoem and university.

So, it is quite possible that her parents included her in their schedule and the school added her to their schedule.

I would have thought that if she was in the poor law school the likeliest reason would be that she had been abandoned by her parents or removed for her own welfare. It seems strange that the parents might include her in the census is those circumstances.

I've had a look and can't see any surviving records of Brentford Union that might be of any obvious use (Twickenham and Chiswick were both under the Brentford Union).

It all seems very mysterious. You're sure that Robert and Eliza were your Alice's parents? Could the Alice in the workhouse be a different one? Might she be in the process of being removed and the parents were still in denial?

Don't really know what to suggest.
