I wouldn't necessarily look for a John GREGORY who was a policeman in 1851/61 - assuming that you have a birthplace for James from 1871, I suggest searching for other GREGORYs born or living in the same area to try and build up a picture of how extensive the name was. James' dad may have had a different occupation at the time of census returns, he may have had another forename under which he was recorded - could he have been for example Thomas John and been known as Thomas in one return and John in the next (it happened)
Have you found any James GREGORYs in the 1851 census? Are any of them anywhere near to the birthplace given in 1871?
James is often abbreviated to 'Jas', which can easily be mistaken for 'Jos' (short for Joseph) - failure to locaet him may just be down to poor indexing.
Where was John living at time of marriage and where was he born? Who were the witnesses - any relatives?

is there a way i can do a street search on any site to see if any gregorys live in swallow/swollow st also i cannot find many james with father john on any cenusI don't know about Ancestry because I don't use it, but with 1837 online it is possible to search the 1861 census by address and I believe a similar facility exists for S+N's site
i cannot find many james with father john on any cenus
It may be that he was not with his father in ealier census returns, another thought that occurs is that a transcriber may have recorded your chap as John Gregory and with another surname. I have known it to happen that the last obvious surname was ascribed to a chap called Thomas James, where James should have been recorded as his surname.
