I have a FREDERICK BILES recorded as being a Gunner No. 52645 in the Royal Field Artillery. No battalion or Unit. He was given the ''Pip, Squek and Wilfred'' medals and it shows he was DISCHARGED. I presume that means he was wounded in France as that is where he was. I cannot find what happened to him but on looking up deaths on 1837online I can only find one Frederick Biles who died Southampton which would be near the Biles family from Powerstock, Portsmouth and Southampton
age 67 years January/March 1914. Would he have been that old to be say a volunteer even Or even at 50 years of age?.

Hoping someone might recognise any of this. Morris 71

Hi Morris,

Was "your" Frederick Biles- Frederick Charles Biles, born 18 March 1899, Reg District Weymouth, Vol 5a, Page 296 ?

If so, his death was registered in February 1988 at Poole Vol 23, Page 868 Reg No 288.

Sorry Morris, But the above may be a bit too young to have received a 1914, or 1914-15 Star, although lots did lie about their age.

Hi Morris,

Yet another bite at this cherry:o . Seeing your other post about Powerstock, could your Frederick be the Frederick Biles in the 1901 Census, son? of John and Constance Biles, Chideock? He was aged 5, which would make him about 19 at the start of the Great War.

Would like to say Thank you for the replies I received about the FREDERICK BILES I was searching for. I have found him. He was born Powerstock and was there with his parents till the 1901 census as a Thatcher along with his father. Although I have not yet got his death certificate, his age, name of parents were not on the Military genealigy site where I found him. I have been informed that his name is on the Monument for the fallen ones of the 1914-1918 in Powerstock.
It would be good though if I could be contacted by any descendants of his siblings. I have no idea whom they could be at this stage.

Thank you again for all who kindly replied. Morris 71. (Biles/Byles descendant

I have been searching for Frederick Biles/Byles of whom my mother spoke about as being a Veteran of the Crimean War. She was living in Portsmouth at the time as a young girl. He survived the war and she went to his Veteran funeral and I assume it was at Portsmouth. She remembers him being very old, very tall and thin and she called him Uncle. I get the feeling he was not married either. I do not know what regiment he could have been in and now Mum is dead. She was born 1901 so the funeral had to be a few years after that date. Has anyone any idea;s about how I could find out more about him as I do not know where he was born or his age at death?. Any lists I can search for Crimean Veterans?? I have searched for possible Fredericks but if he was born before 1837 that makes things more difficult

Would love to solve this family enigma. Morris 71

Hi Morris

I just wondered if you had checked the pension records on Ancestry, I can see two initially - not that fit your criteria, but may be worth a look.

(I did try to post details of the other two but the site told me to busy when I tried to post and all the details had gone when I got back on).

Some of the Powerstock parish records have been put on line by Sandy Pearcey and there is a Frederick George, son of George & Marianne BILES, baptised 29-Aug 1880.
