View Full Version : Henry Nott
HENRY NOTT was born St Martin Birmingham Warickshire (his birth in Birmingham is all we have in the family Bible) - if we have the right record it is spelt NUTT father Thomas Nutt mother Fanny I have yet to get his death cert...he was at one time an engineer in the Queens Guard I don't have dates for that. He emigrated to Australia I dont have dates for that. He worked in the Gympie Gold Mines until the 1920s then moved to Brisbane.
He married Annie Hunt 25/10/1890 in Gympie. They had 4 children (3 girls and 1 boy).
Can someone confirm the birth date and place please.
I was also wanting dates for:
When was he in the Queens Guards?
When did he emigrate to Australia?
When I have this info I can move on to finding out the dates he worked at the Gympie Gold mines and also find out what he did for work in Brisbane after the move from Gympie.
He died in Brisbane 10/11/1923 and now rests with Annie in the same grave site at Dutton Park Cemetery Brisbane.

You mention that you have his birth recorded in a family bible, does this include a date? Also, what was his age at marriage and death?
With a rough date of birth - have you tried searching the GRO index of births?
If he married in 1890 - have you tried searching the freely available transcript of the 1881 census? Other census returns are available online.

:) Yes that date is what is in the index
Queensland Federation Index 1890-1914
Reference number for marriage: 1890/000877
When did he emigrate to Australia?
:) I would suggest you follow the same information trails given in your other emigration threads.

there are some earlier emigration indexes for Queensland here. You will need acrobat reader (free) to view the files which are sorted by name groups. There are some NOTT people there, I didn't look at NUTT.

What if he had entered the Queens Guards by 1881 could he be enlisted that young?
He was an engineer in the Guards. So he would have had to study wouldn't he and not worked?

a HINT for you Deidre - never automatically think someone is not yours because the age or name isn't exact. Back in those days these things were not cut and dried at all. Half the time they couldn't remember how old they were - they were lucky if they could even write, so they didn't know how to spell their names consistently. Things were written how they sounded to whoever wrote them down.
It is possible it is another Fanny and Thomas having a Henry of course. If you get Henry's marriage certificate to Annie then you will know what his father's occupation was. An engineer in those days would learn by being an apprentice, often at a young age. Does it mention the Queens Guards in your family Bible? or did this info come from another source, as it may not actually relate to this Henry.

The Queens Guards and engineer came from my grandmother and when he came out here he was an engineer in the Gympie Gold Mines. So basicly it is word of mouth.

How do you know he would have been 16 in 1881?, how do you know the name has not varied between NUTT and NOTT?
The GRO index of births, marriages and deaths is available in its entirety online on a pay-per-view site 1837online.com there is also a project to transcribe the index, it is a useful place to start - not yet complete, but free
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
www.streetmap.co.uk (http://www.streetmap.co.uk) will help you to locate where places are in the UK, Burford, Shropshire is about 30 miles WSW of Birmingham. It would be a long stretch of the imagination for someone from Burford, Shrops, to say they were born in Brum.

Be kind I haven't been doing this for very long and I still believe everything that comes out of my great grandmothers family Bible and my mothers mouth. That is what makes me think he would be 16 then. The f/Bible says Birmingham and Mum says they were the same age and Annie was 16 and turned 17 at sea on her way to Australia 1882. Just Logic I guess.
thanks for the links but my husband wont let me use the credit card on the net - and don't you dare be a man and say smart man. Oh! you don't have to do you I have.
I've been to freebmd and a couple of others but I will try again. I can't stop I've got to know now this realy hooks you. I've already started gathering what I can for my husbands side so as to start there if I can stop myself from going back and back with Mum and Dad's side. That streetmap one is new though I'll go check it out now.

Can do all this now Geoffers....got the marriage cert for Henry Nott and Annie Hunt.
Henry NOTT born Hampton Lovett Worcestershire he was 33 yo when married and they married 25/10/1890 makes him around c1857 At time of marriage he was a miner.
By any chance is Hampton Lovett Worcestershire anywhere near Birmingham?
His father Samuel was a gamekeeper his mother was Mary Brookin
So I go check census and births if I have any trouble 'I'll Be Baaack' as Arnie would say.
I'm high on excitement.
