Desperately looking for Alfred Robert Green - I am a South African (new to genealogy) looking to find my great-grandfather who came to this country during the Anglo-Boer War 1898-1902. Unfortunately everything I know is hearsay and living family members do not always agree with each other on the (very sketchy) details. It is rumored that he met my great-grandmother (Mita Mary Magdalena Laubuschagne) in a concentration camp during the war and that they got married after the war. She was born on the 06th March 1878 and died in Krugersdorp in April 1961. My grandfather (one of 21 children) was born in Betshuanaland. I think that is present day Botswana. When I go into the websites on the Boer War there are numerous A R Green’s. Without a date of birth or place of birth, how do I go about finding out which of the AR Green’s actually remained in South Africa after the war? Is there anyone out there that can point me in the right direction? Remembering of course that I live in South Africa and thus are unable to go looking for actual records in the U.K. I have a tin full of war medals but I am not sure if they are for my great-grandfather who fought in the Boer War or if they are in fact from my grandfather that fought in WWII. If anyone can help, I would be eternally grateful! – Thanx Sue Armitage (yeah I married an Englishman)
Ps – please forgive any mistakes I make in posting this query. I will get the hang of it eventually

Hi,
You say you have a tin full of war medals. I'd start there. If there are any Boer War era medals amongst them, it makes your task easy.
You're looking for the QSA and/or KSA, see illustrations on these pages

If these aren't amongst what you have, I'll gladly take it further and help you identify what they are.

Hi Neil
Thanx so much for pointing me in some direction. Man alive it is good to know that I am not totally alone in this family search jungle! I will check it all out and take you up on your kind offer if I get stuck. Thanx again!

Sue,
If you can't identify either of the medals already mentioned, try matching the ribbons on the ones you have against this chart. I'm hoping that once you can identify them we can say more.

I got all the medals out and they were all for my grandfather and one of his brothers during WW2. For AR Green (grandfather) they are the Africa Service medal, The 1939-45 Star, The Africa Star, The Italy Star, The Defence medal and The War Medal 1939-45. Not a wasted search as when I got the box with the medals out I found a very interesting letter, two birth certificates (unfortunately not for my great-grandfather), a marriage certificate for my grandparents and my grandfathers last will and testament. Things I didn't even know I had!
Thanx for you help in this Neil. I will just have to keep digging,
Sue
