Sorry if this is on the wrong thread, but wasn't sure where to put it.

My lot certainly like to give me headaches in more ways than one! I reckon that I am slowly catching up on Mythology. ;)

I now have a `same sex' Civil Partnership in my tree and am completely at a loss as to how to enter it into my Family History Programme. I have Brothers Keeper 6, and there are various headings that I could use, but each time I select one and put in the `spouse' it will take the person's details, but of course insists that they are `male' instead of female!

Has anyone encountered this in their tree yet or have any ideas on how I can get over this? I suppose the only other way is to leave it showing as `male' and put it in notes. I guess in time, the programmers will come up with a solution as there seems to be a lot of these events these days. I am only glad that I shan't be around to try and piece the puzzle together in 100yrs time!

I use Family Tree Maker version 2005. Your posting made me go look to see if they had addressed the issue, although, I don't have a need for it at the moment. It appears that they have made the accommodation in their software. The Husband and Wife headings each change to Partner and the heading Marriage Date, changes to Meeting Date. I haven’t checked any further to see what the impact is on the reminder of the software. I’ll delve into those details when the situation presents itself. For the moment my curiosity is satisfied.

I use TMG and like your programme Glenys it insists that I've got it wrong. I've decided to leave my s-i-l's partner out for the time being until I can work out how to add her in.

That's interesting Ed,....Partner would be better than the wrong sex showing on the file. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks Annie. I don't `really' have to add this record at this moment, but I don't like leaving unfinished records, when I know there is something missing. I'm likely to forget it!!

I hope the relevant FH programmes will put in a fix soon, as I am sure there is definately a need for it I know it's not imperative now, and I wouldn't have these details in the public domain anyway, but I would like to see this recorded correctly.

In BK6.19 latest version but may work with earlier versions

Fill in the details of both people name and sex minimum required.
Using the edit screen select one of the partners, in the add menu select spouse/partner.
Type in the partner's name, accept the option when the same sex error message comes up.
Cheers

Thank you so much Guy it worked. I have BK6.3 but hadn't approached it in the same way as you did. As I don't have much information on the `partner' yet I did it as a spouse, which of course was incorrect.

It's nice being able to ask an expert! ;)

TMG looks to be OK to me. It throws up a warning message that the couple in a marriage are of the same sex but if you ignore the warning, it accepts it and records a marriage entry.

You would probably want to create a new Civil Partnership tag with some appropriate wording rather than use the Marriage tag. You might want to experiment with a tag in the 'Marriage' group and one in the 'Other' group and check whether one produces better results than the other.
