Hi
I am tracing Mortimores who i suspect originated from Devon (as most of them seem to!) but am stuck. My line comes from William Mortimore who married Mary Higgs in 1775 at White Waltham. His son Joseph (1775-1835) is my great great great grandfather but I have been unable to trace back further than that. The Mortimores were by and large all farmers throughout Berkshire.
Can anyone help?
many thanks
Sally

Dear Sally,
Also descended from William Mortimer and Mary Higgs from Bray and White Waltham and have been trying hard to find where Williams hails from for some time. Have come across some info which locates him in London between 1777 and 1786 which i will be glad to pass on to you. I also live Essex Coast and if i have guessed right from other info on the net that i came across with both live and work in the Southend area. Would be great to pull resources and perhaps we can solve the mystery of William's origin. I also have a lot of interesting info gleaned from Manor Court documents and other documents in the Berkshire Record Office.
If i am right and we are local perhaps you could give me a ring and we could meet up to exchange info.

Hello,
I have just been browsing this forum and came across your two posts, I realise this thread is over a year old but it's worth a try. I am researching George Wise born circa 1780 and I believe Joseph Mortimer sold him a piece of land/cottage near Hawthorne Lane in about 1817 from 'Land enclosures BRO'. In the 1851 census a daughter of George, Mary Wise, is a visitor to Jane Mortimer at her home in Touchen End, Berkshire.
I know this is not a lot of help to either of you but you may well be able to help me, please. George married Elizabeth Kentfield of Warfield in 1801 at Winkfield. My real problem is that I do not know where George was born and several of us have been searching for a couple of years now.
I would be very grateful for any help,

Hi - I cant find the Mary Wise you refer to and there were a number of Jane Mortimore's in Touchen End at different points in history (all related which makes things a bit confusing!)! Can you check your information and I may be able to help you - i have all sorts of bits of information although i suspect that Sue may be more able to help as she has even more info at her disposal - I will pass on a message to her.

Hello,
Pleased to hear from you I wasn't very hopeful!
Geo. Wise born c. 1780 where ? married Elizabeth Kentfield born c. 1776 in Warfield
Five children - one being Mary born c.1806 White Waltham
The other children born in Touchen End, Bray and Braywoodside.
When Geo. died I believe he was living at Popes farm W Waltham George left a will leaving his estate at Braywood Hill Bray to his wife Elizabeth and three of his children. This will was made in 1844 and Geo. died before the 1851 census. His children George and Mary were unmarried and remained unmarried, John was abroad (meaning in context - away)
We found on the land enclosures that Geo. purchased some land and/or a cottage from Joseph Mortimer (1817 I think) at Bray Common. There is also mention under private roads of '20feet wide leading from the Forest Green Driftway through Long Lane into the Hawthorn Road near the cottage of George Wise' I don' think this has anything particularly associated to the Mortimers it just shows that there was a cottage there.
I am keen to know if your Mortimer owned Popes farm, Howe Farm aand Buck Farm all in the area of White Waltham. (As Popes Farm recurs frequently with the Wises) I did find Jane MortiNer Foreman farmer's wife aged 70 born White Waltham head and a widow. Also living there Sarah MortiNer 25 Unmarried servant, dressmaker born Bray.
What I am hoping for is to find the birth place of George Wise Mar. to Elizabeth Kentfield. I am hoping the Wises and Mortimers were good friends and that you or your other researcher may have uncovered something which will help me.
I hope this makes some sene to you,
Regards, Fortuna
