I am looking for information on James Moore who was a Quarter Master in the 1st Royal Scots from the 1850's. James and his wife Esther Bellchambers (nee PICK) had 8 children:

Henry N. b. Gibraltar in 1857

John W. b Hong Kong in 1859

Francis b. Birr in 1860

Margaret J. b. Aldershot in 1862

Hugh b. Nusseerabad 1868

Mary E. b. Agra in 1870

Annie b. Ranikhet in 1873

Bridget b. Ranikhet in 1873

Can anyone sugggest wher I might find their marriage details and more information on the 1st Royal Scots?
Kindest regards
Narelle

The marriage may well be recorded in the Index to Army Chaplains Returns of Marriages 1796-1880.

The index is available on the pay-per-view site 1837online select 'Overseas' records then 'marriages and the relevant list to search. If you find an entry, note down all the details and you can order a certificate via the GRO.

Births of their children may be included in the Army Chaplains' Returns of Births 1796-1880 or the Regimental Registers of Births 1761-1924, which are also both on the above web-site. Certificates can again be ordered via the GRO with the full reference.

Your chap's service record at TNA should reveal some interesting information, see TNA's research guides

For the regiment, try this web-site

The Naval and Military Press may have a book on the regiment

I can place your man in the 2nd China War 1860 from the medal roll:
Quartermaster James Moore, 2nd Battn 1st Foot. 2-bar medal for Taku Forts 1860 and Pekin 1860.

After service in the Crimea, the 2/1st Foot served in the Mediterranean until they replaced the 59th as garrison battalion of Hong Kong. They boarded the "Lord Raglan" at Gibraltar on 6 July 1858 and arrived at Hong Kong on 28th Nov. The battalion was ordered to join the expedition to the north of China in 1860. They boarded transports for Talien-whan Bay (8 May to 30 Jun), from where they re-embark to Pehtang (24th July to 1 Aug). After service in the taking of Taku Forts (21 Aug 1860) and the advance to Pekin. the Royals returned to the Taku Forts where they embark for Hong Kong once again. From Hong Kong they then return to Portsmouth on the ships "MacDuff" and "Cressy" arriving in April 1861.

Also had a quick look at the Crimea roll, and there is 1882 Colour Sergeant James Moore, 2/1st Foot, who could well be the same man before he became quartermaster.

Hello Neil and Geoffers,
Many thanks for your assistance with this query. I have been away from the website for some time and have only just got back to it today. I am having trouble assessing off the TNA site. Is there any information online or must I go to the archives itself?

The War information also sounds very interesting and I will look into it further and see if I can find out any more info regarding his reason for attaining the medals.
I am very greatful for you help.
Kindest regards
Narelle
