Emigration from England 1635

Have traced an ancestor John Cate born 1620 emigrated from England
(don't know port) in 1635 aboard ship "Safety". How may I go about finding more information? I think he probably landed in Virginia but this is not positive. Any help will be so appreciated.

The National Archvies (TNA) at Kew has some records which may assist for this period, registers of passengers bound for Virginia and other colonies are held in TNA's class E157. Some information is also held in CO1. I understand this information has been printed in 'Original lists of Persons emigrating to America, 1600-1700' by J C Hotten, published London 1874.

If your chap was bonded, try P. W. Coldham's series of books, in particular 'Bonded Passengers to America, 1615-1775.' published Baltimore 1983.

Do you have anythig else on this chap? Was he wealthy? Did he have a skilled profession? Did he emigrate alone? Any mention of relatives? Any idea how old he was when he emigrated? Was he married at the time? Any suggestion as to where his family may have originated? - Try the surname profiler, it's only an indication and the earliest you can try is 1881, but it might be give an indication.

This fellow was only 15 yrs old. I know nothing else about him. However
family records seem to indicate that his grandson Robert was born in 1670 in Henrico County, VA. I don't know John's wife or the number and names of his children. Thanks for your suggestions, I am going to try to trace him down from them. I want to know his home in England and his parents etc. Thanks again, I am a novice at this and do appreciate help.

Over the years I have seen multitudes of surnames whilst perusing the pioneer immigrants to Virginia; my own ancestors belonging to this genre of folk. The Cate line of Henrico and Surry counties, VA are also in this category indeed. Although the details I have seen are somewhat different than yours, owenkittyo.
