I am trying to trace the marriage of THOMAS WILLIAM DUNN & SUSAN DOWN.
On the 1871 census, Susan is shown as DUNN (aged 25) living in St Thomas the Apostle, Exeter Devon, with her parents (the 10 year old child Bessie is not hers - she is a DOWN). Her son THOMAS JOHN DUNN was born in July 1871 but the birth was not registered until Mar Qtr 1872! I cannot find THOMAS WILLIAM who was born c1851 - 1852 in Shoreditch.
I have been unable to trace the marriage of Thomas W & Susan - I have been through quarter by quarter but I am beginning to think that they might not have been married, or are mistranscribed. I thought that they might have delayed registering the sons birth to enable them to get married in the meantime.
They seem to have started out in Devon - they are two sons born there who survived into adulthood - and (I THINK) two daughters who died in infancy - I have found some entries on the local church register. I have also ordered some certificates but they don't prove anything.
They then move to Bermondsey by 1881, and by 1891 Thomas has remarried (I can find that one!) as Susan dies in 1889.
One of their sons turns up on a census staying with his aunt and uncle (the aunt is Susan's sister), so I am certain she is the Susan Down is I am looking for but a marriage cert would be nice.
I have considered marriages outside Devon - Susan's elder brother had moved to London by 1871 and one other sister appears to have followed him and married up there.
Is anyone researching these people - or can anyone come up with an inventive spelling for DUNN or DOWN?
