Officer in Royal Navy

I have now more "proof" that my Greenwich pensioner 3x gr grandfather was an officer of the Royal Navy. His daughter's marriage registration certificate lists him as such. I am requesting guidance on where to search for records of his service as his name: John HAWKINS,has caused a paid researcher to decline the challenge. I know he was born in Gosport, Hampshire in 1790 but he married and raised his family in Southwark, London area. All input appreciated.

it might be of some help, although it's possible that the records didn't start earlier enough to list him.
