Before ordering a copy birth certificate I am seeking details of the birth of Clara Howard, the daughter of Joseph Howard and Caroline Endicott, I have been told that she was born in 1850 or 1851 in Brighton or Hove, East Sussex but this is not certain information.
Do anyone have any definite information? Is anyone already researching this family?
Regards & thanks

Hi John,
Can I ask you what your source is & have you found a reference for the GRO entry for her birth?
I've searched the 1851 & 1861 census under all names & spellings but can't find Clara or her parents. However, on the Familysearch IGI I found this extracted record - Florence Rose HAYWARD d/o Joseph & Caroline baptised 5/2/1865, Willingdon, Ssx.
FreeBMD has a birth registration for Clara Elizabeth Octavia? HAYWARD, Cuckfield Sep. quarter 1858 (7 36 [6])
Do you have a marriage date for Joseph?

Thank you for your reply. I am actually trying to trace this family for someone else and the information that I have has been passed through several generations of the family by word of mouth. Clara Howard is reputed to have gone to live in the USA sometime between 1855 and 1858 because her mother Caroline Howard died at sometime between 1851 and 1855.
Thanks again
John

Hi John,
Have you tried the Ellis Island site to see if & when she went to America?
She must have gone with her father as she would have been so young. Do they have marriage or death details of her once in the States? As she & her parents can't be found in 1851 or 1861 it makes sense that perhaps they did emmigrate.
You can search for her parents marriage certificate, free on Ancestry, that might give a clue as to where they all were & at what time.

Hi
I am researching John HOWARD (who may or may not be related). His 1868 Australian marriage certificate gives his place of birth as Brighton, England and his father's name as Joseph. His father's occupation is given as 'mason'. John's year of birth would have been about 1834. I have not yet been able to ascertain whether he came to Australia as a free settler or as a convict or exactly when he came or his port of arrival. Have you come across anyone who fits these details in your research?
Regards,
Malcolm

Thank you.
I've not yet found a connection but I will be in touch when I have dug a little deeper.
