Hi Ann
Can I take it that your reference to just the December Quarter 1842 means that you are using an Index and not the actual Birth Certificate? If it is got from an Index, then it does not follow that John was born in East Stonehouse, the only thing you can be sure of is that East Stonehouse was where the birth was registered. East Stonehouse was and is a seafaring area, so it is possible that it was the "first" opportunity to register the birth. I have a similar case in Falmouth. If you don't have the Birth Certificate, it really is the best place to start. Also, have you tried alternative spellings, eg Thom?

Thank you Peter. Yes ref.is from index. So I guess the Certificate is the answer. I have been searching for James Tom for 4 years! His marriage cert. & census says he was b. in Cornwall & his fathers name was Anthony Tom but so far have had no luck tracing his roots. I do believe he was b. in 1842. But have doubts about most other facts about him or his father!! Yes I have tried all Tom variations.
This geneaology business is so frustrating! Thanks anyway. Ann
