I think that there must be sections of the 1841 census that are missing. I am unable to find 2 families on the census. One in Salford and one in Rochdale. Does anyone know if there is a listing for returns that are missing?

Are you relying on indexes (which can be notoriously incorrect), or are you looking through the actual documents for the place and doing your search by eye?

Hi Jen,
Go into Ancestry 1841 search and scroll to bottom of page. A list of missing pieces and areas appear here. It does not however list any of Lancashire as missing.

I see what you mean. However I am unable to find James and Margaret Sheldon on the 1841 census. They were living at Cross Lane Salford in an 1841 directory. They were both born in Derbyshire(Eyam) I did find one Margaret on the census with the right birth date ( around 1790) however the only person with her is a Matilda and there is no mention of a child with this name. The children by 1841 were William, Ann, Edward, Mary and Jane none of whom are to be found. Is there any way to narrow the search to Cross Lane?
Thanks jenny

Thanks jennyHi Jenny,

I've found them in Cross Lane, and as usual Ancestry have messed up with the indexing again. They're listed as being born in Leicestershire and residing in Manchester, Leicestershire plus they were indexed as SHELDEN!!!

I'll type up the details and send them in the next message for you.

Here you go Jenny.

There is no James (except a son so there's an extra child for you) and Margaret is living on independent means so it looks like James died.

Wonderful. I'm still not sure how you found them. Yes, father James must have died already. I knew there was another son called James as i have been contacted by descendant of James. He saw my post about the Sheldon family. Now I will be able to share this with him.
this is my first lesson on the inaccuracies in Ancestry.
Thanks jen
