Can SKS help me to find the date that a house in York Road, Chorlton cum Hardy was built?
I tried the 1901 Census web site, and failed so I know that it was built after 1901. I have tried to find a street directory for Chorlton online but have failed there also.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

In general terms use maps and aerial photos to determine when the house first appears.

If you can view the house or have photos various features such as the chimney pots or the windows may give clues.

This is another of those times when it is difficult to advise without knowing what is known or available to the researcher.

Hi Barbara,
can't help you with a date but did you do just address search on 1901?
Brookfield Chorlton Cum Hardy YLancashireWithingtonChrist ChStretford Withington West Didsbury
This comes up for address search in 1901. Is this any where near?
Loads of places come up as a random search in Lancashire for that name in the 1881 census.
Do you know any more?
Jo :)

As well as the other suggestions made, if you ever visit TNA at Kew, try using the valuation records and maps created under the Finance Act 1910. This was yet another scheme by government to raise funds (it ultimately failed :) ).

The survey as a result of this Act took place between 1910 and 1913 and records descriptions and valuations of houses, along with names of owner and tenant. These are held in Field Books in class IR58. The Field Books refer to Valuation Office Recrod Maps, which pinpoint individual buildings. The maps are in IR121/1 - IR135/9.

Another series of books record occupiers of the dwellings, these are known as Domesday Books - I haven't had cause to use these, but understand that you should locate them in the County Record Office.

Thanks Jo and Geoffers,
We don't have much more to go on. The house has a name 'GL*****Y', it is very worn we believe. The house has come up a few times in conversation and we are wondering who lived there around the early 1900's. Perhaps one of lost relatives!

Jo, yes I did just put the house number -21- in the 1901 address search and West Didsbury and Withington are near Chorlton cum Hardy

Geoffers thanks for all your suggestions I will have to start a new search. Perhaps a trip to Manchester.

Many thanks to you both,

Barbara

Barbara,
Newport, South WalesWell Barbara, this looks like a trip to Chorlton for me unless you have the information you need? Though I must say that I strongly suspect that it was built before 1901. Maybe York Road changed its name?

John

Barbara, having reread this thread and seen that there is a York Road in, where was it, Withington, it is 100% certain that the name has changed. I have an early A/Z which should clear the matter up, it is however, in a safe place, as soon as I remember the safe place, I'll get back to you.

John

Well OK 95% certain but I have remembered where my A/Z is and I shall sort this one this week.
BTW, for anybody who may be interested, I am compiling a database of street name changes in Manchester.

Barbara, sorry for the delay, work and a bad leg.
I found myself in Chorlton today so popped round to York Rd. Unfortunately without my camera.
No 21 is a large semi-detached 3 story house. It wasn't the home of an artisan, rather the home of a well todo merchant with the top floor being probably occupied by servents.
I would date the house in the late 1800's, almost certainly before 1901.

More later.

John,

Thanks so much for your interest and sorry that I have not replied earlier. Have been on a baby-sitting break with my son and his family.

From your discription it sounds as if 21 York Road is an interesting house. I have not any family names that tie up with the house, just a mention that has been passed on through the family, and you know what can happen then!.

I will have to delve a bit deeper and see what I can come up with.

Thanks again,

regards,

Barbara
