Census help - Weymouth

Hi

Hope someone can help me.

My great grandmother LOUISA SHARP was born in Dorset in 1879 (registered in Weymouth).

I have been looking for her on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses but haven't been able to find her on 1881 or 1891.

She is listed on the 1901 which I viewed on Ancestry which has her birth place listed as Weymouth her year of birth as abt 1880 and she was working as a servant in Melcombe Regis.

Does anyone have any ideas for the 1881 and 1891 census as I don't know the dorset area?

Her father's name is JOHN if that helps.

What was her mothers name and is there any siblings? Also have you any other address information that might help, ie birth certs of siblings as to where they were living etc etc. I think that they may have been mistranscribed, either by the enumerator or by ancestry. The more info that you can supply the better. No luck in finding here at the present. :(

Yes, I see what you mean, that's a tough one.

From what you've said, I'm making the assumption the family always lived in the Weymouth area. I see from multimap.com that Melcombe Regis, where you found your great-grandmother in 1901, is near Weymouth.

I think what I'd try next (if you haven't already done so) is to search Weymouth page by page (forget the index!), then the surrounding areas including Melcombe Regis, and I think I'd try that with the 1881 census first.

What did Louisa's father do? Consider that, as it may give you a clue to where they lived. Also, have you considered that they may have been known by or used other names at times? Sometimes too, names have been spelt in very creative ways . . .

Hi, I could not find them either, but I did look for a John Sharp in 1901, found a possible one.

John Sharp 1854 Brighton Sussex
Elizabeth 1859 Portland Dorset
Alice M 1882 Gibralter
Emma E 1884 Portsmouth Hants
Elizabeth 1886 Burma

If this is yours family them it would count for not finding them in 1881 and possibly 1891.

If this is the right couple then they married 1877 Sept qtr Weymouth district, Elizabeth Jane Broughton & John Sharp

There is a Louisa born in 1879 in the Weymouth district, maybe you could get her certificate and also Emma E 1884 then you will see if they have the same parents

Melcombe Regis is part of Weymouth and a port is around there.
