His death certificate would give the cause - the local records office may have inherited any surviving records from the hospital

Perhaps this research guide will be a good one to read...

The link to obatining service records, provided by Peter, should be your first target. TNA's online catalogue indicates that they hold some documents relating to the hospital. With a service record, you may then be able to locate detail on why he was admitted to the hospital via musters and log books.

Hi Lorri,
I noticed that you are researching the Royal Navy Hospital in Great Yamouth. I was wondering how you went as I am having a lot of trouble in finding records of a James Smith who died the Royal Navy hospital in 1912. I have his death certificate and it tell me very little of his death and what he died from. He was there for a very long time. Could you please tell me what avenues you had taken so as I may be able to do the same.
Thank you for your help and I look forward to your reply.

Have you tried to obtain his service records?

Hi Peter,
On the Death certificate it says he died from General Paralysis. His occupation was Pensioner (he wasnt that old), Royal Navy from Hasler. James Smith was born 1876 in Havant, Hampshire. I have his services records and they dont have a lot either. He was on the Victory from 1907 to 1908 then after that they have written Invaild Insane??? I think his service record number is 23323. It has the ships that he served on from 1892 to 1908 but I would love to know what happened to them on the ship to cause him to go insane and what it was like in the Hospital.

It was nothing on the ship that caused it! He died from tertiary syphilis.
"General paralysis" or "general paralysis of the insane" was the normal description of this condition at the time.

Thank you for that tip bit, thats great. How come that was not written on his death certificate?? and how did you find it?? Would you know how it was caused. Could it have been stress or family genes?

Hi Peter,
you are probably laughing at me with the question on what caused it. I have had a look on the internet just now. So I know now#### it wasnt stress I guessing.

At least you got that message through quickly enough to avoid a lot of explicit answers to the questions! :D :D :D
Although you can't entirely rule out stress...;)
