I have found a sort-of relative of my husband's in Brixton Jail in 1871. How can I find out why he was in there ?
Aaron Leigh was born in the Aspull area of Wigan, in Lancashire, about 1840. In 1860 he married Esther Simpkin, at Wigan Registry Office. She already had a daughter, Catherine, who was born 3 years earler, when her mother was only 16. Catherine was my hubby's great great grandmother. I don't know who her father was, I've not ruled out the possibility that Aaron was her father.
In 1861 Aaron & Esther were in Wigan, he was a coal miner. Catherine was with her grandparents. In 1871 Esther & Catherine are with relatives in Wigan & Aaron is in prison in Brixton Jail.
Catherine was married in 1874. In 1881 Aaron & Esther are together again, in Skelmersdale, along with their granddaughter, Elizabeth Sharrock (Catherine's daughter). Aaron is a coal miner.
In 1891 Aaron is in Oldham, with a new wife, he was a naughty boy ! In 1888 he married Mary Ann Carr, in Oldham. That was at least a year before Esther died.
At some stage, after 1891, he moved back to Wigan with his new wife. They were there in 1901. Not that any of this is relevant !!!
What I want to know is how I can find out when & why Aaron was sent to prison ?
