...Emanuel christened 24 Dec 1848 at Temple Quiting, married a Sarah c1848 born Llanfoist, Monmouth, known children: Mary Ann 1871, Sarah Ann 1873, Maria 1876, George 1880, Emanuel 1887, Hedley 1891. 1881 at Trevethin, Monmouth, 1901 at Blaenavon. ...Marg,

The 1891 census lists a niece who may offer a clue:

1891 Census: RG12/4350 Folio 11 Page 36
Address: ?Coity? Pit Houses, Llanfoist, Monmouthshire
-- Emmanuel [sic] TURNER Head M 41 Contractor Man born Gloucester Templegilmey [sic]
-- Sarah do Wife M 40 born ?Monoutts? Llgnfoist
-- Maria do Daur 11 Scholar born do ?Blaenason? [or Blaenavon]
-- George do Son 11 born do do
-- Emmanuel do do 4 born do do
-- Mary Ann TAYLOR Niece 6 born do Abercorn

FreeBMD has a marriage record for an Emmanuel TURNER in the 2nd quarter of 1870 in Abergavenny. Possible brides are a Sarah PROSSER and a Sarah TAYLOR. -- Volume 11a Page 114.

I would say, based on the 1891 census, Emanuel's wife's maiden name was likely TAYLOR.

Trish

Marg,

Do you have the 1851 census for Emanuel? This would appear to fit:

Census: 1851: HO107/1971 Folio 21 Page 15
Address: Temple Guiting, Gloucestershire
-- John TURNER Head Mar 38 Shepherd born Wilts Summerford Cains
-- Mary Do Wife Mar 37 born Glos Naunton
-- John Do Son U 15 Agricultural Labourer born Taddington
-- Maria Do Daur 11 Scholar born Glos Temple Guiting
-- Mary A.? Daur 9 Do born Do
-- Sarah Do Daur 6 Do born Do
-- John Do Son 4 -- born Do
-- Emmanual [sic] Do Son 2 -- born Do
-- Susanna TURNER Daur 5 mo born Glos Temple Guiting
-- Thomas HOOPER Brother Widr 31 AGricultural Labourer born Glos Naunton
-- David ABALE Lodger U 47 Do born Glos Temple Guiting

It's odd that there are two sons named John. It would appear, judging from the common birthplace, that Thomas HOOPER is actually Mary TURNER's brother, not John's.

Trish

Hello Trish,

Thank you for your help, much appreciated. The 1851 census is the family I research. The first son of John Turner and Mary Hooper is referred to as Jehu in some places and John in others. Jehu/John being my direct ancestor. Thanks from a very hot, sunny, Comox, Vancouver Island. Marg.

Marg,

So you're chasing down the twigs of your main branch, are you?

I can see that, in 1851, a George TURNER who fits your description, is visiting another family:

Census: 1851: HO107/1971 Folio 21 Page 15
Address: Temple Guiting, Gloucestershire
-- George WIGGETT Head Mar 32 Agricultural Labourer born Worc Cutsdean
-- Sarah Do Wife Mar 32 born Glo Guiting Power
-- James Do Son U 12 Plough Boy born Temple Guiting
-- Alice Do Daur 9 Scholar born Do
-- Lura Do Daur 4 -- born Do
-- Mary Do Daur 1 -- born Do
-- George TURNER Bisitor 13 -- born Do

Do you have parents John/Jehu and Mary TURNER and brother Emanuel in 1841 and 1861? I can see them on the census [but without George in 1861 when he would be about 23] and can give you transcriptions if you like. The 1841 listing also shows a Jane HOOPER in the household.

HTH,
Trish

Hello Trish,
I have not had the privelege of seeing the 1841 census for John Turner so that would be most appreciated if have access. Yes, I am trying all the twigs as my great grandmother, Mary Ann Maria Turner, b 1864, daughter of Jehu Turner and I think Emma Mycroft, had five known children, but the birth registrations of three do not list a father. Ever hopeful that someone will know about this family even after all these years .
Birth place for Mary Ann Maria Turner has: 1891 census for Temple Guiting, Gloucester has Didbrook, Pinnock, Gloucester.
1901 census has born Ford, Gloucester, England. Mary Ann Maria Turner did marry a Samuel Millin Stow on the Wold 6a 915 December 1902

Again thanks for the help. Marg Hutton, Comox, BC.
