 as as hell acually! Here was I was happily going throught all my "favorites" deleting all the ones I no longer want and generally tiding things up, got distracted by someone yapping at me and wiped my whole list of genealogy links! After a fair bit of this |rant| and an equal number of these |5cups| I've managed to find B-G forums again hence the grump. As for the rest...........

Hi Irene
Try this tip - copy your favourite folder to the My Documents folder so that you have a back up.
I a bit grumpy myself tonight, I have managed to spill a cup of tea on to the laptop |oopsredfa and now the keys are playing up. Cap locks is on all the time, numbers won't work, the ctrl key is also intermittant. So apart from drying it out and sticking with the PC tonight, what else can I do |help|
And yes, before you say it, I know that I shouldn't have a drink near the computers.
Hope you manage to find your favourites again
Neil

Yeah I know.... I should have had 'em backed up |oopsredfa but it just brassed me off all the same.
Pouring coffee over your computer is not a good look - nice to other people do daft thigs too.

The question is, Neil, did it have milk and sugar in it? I once poured a whole pot of tea over the keyboard and the printer (I still occasionally find tea leaves in the printer!) but once they'd dried out they were fine and still going strong 8 years later. Milk and sugar are a different story though ..........
Are there any favourites you can't find that we might be able to point you to, Irene?
Mary.

Don't worry Mary if I can't find any I'll be screaming long and loud! So far so good. Thanks for the offer. I can not belive that I was so stupid, that I hadn't backed them up!

Update on laptop - it has dried out and is working perfectly.
Now, if I took sugar, (according to IT at work) it would have been a problem has the sugar makes the keys stick and it very difficult to clean.
On the Favourite saving item, I am on BT internet and their home page has the facility for displaying your favourites once you have logged on. So your favourites travel the world with you. Not sure if other ISP's have this but I think it is a very good idea.

Please to hear the laptop is working well Neil. Sugar in the keys would not have been good.
I've managed to recover most if not all of my favorites - google is a wonderful thing. I am sure the are ones still missing that I won't think of until I go to use them.
Amazing the number of times we do things we know we shouldn't or don't do what we should!

On anotther (non-genealogy) forum I frequent, there is a saying: "You owe me one monitor cleaning" which is for when someone says something really funny, and suggesting that one was drinking at the 'puter at the time.

It's nice to know that others have a drink, whilst using their computers. Luckily, I haven't had any accidents with my cups of tea and coffee, but it's great to find out that it helps a little, if you don't take sugar!
However, I also have a couple of glasses of wine in the late afternoon, before dinner at 5.30p.m. If I were to have an accident ...... would my puter be sloshed?

I think you'll find that if you go to Google and personalise your page (top right hand corner), you can add your favourites there. This means that where ever you go, the list goes with you (although I've not actually used the feature).

Probably not but I expect your posts would be either red or white.
And don't forget Irene that any you've used recently will be in your history.

You mean that hey would be if I didn't wipe my history everynow and then John. And I'd just wipe it the day before as part of the general clean up! Sometimes I'm the biggest clucks this side of the black stump!!
Ah well you live and learn. Well........some of us do.

Irene
yes, that's the way these things work, I thought after I'd posted that if it had been me I would have cleared my memory seconds before wiping my favourites. It's a funny old world.

I dropped a load of beer over the laptop keyboard some years ago. Unfortunately it dripped through on the power supply and processor. The beer shorted out the power onto the CPU. Instant death of CPU!!
However, a keyboard can easily be washed (unplugged!!) in warm water and dried out again in an airing cupboard or over a radiator. Good as new.
For a laptop then unplug the battery, hard disk drive, PCMCIA cards, CD-ROM drive and anything else which unplugs especially the power cord. Then place laptop in shallow warm water NOT deep enough to touch the screen (very important!). Gentle raising and lowering back in will dissolve and flush out the muck. Then dry as above for 24 hours or more. Replug all; it should be OK.
The guts of a PC are only plastic and metal so should wash clean.
