Can anyone tell me what information might be given on a church register of banns around 1877? I have looked on the information website of parish registers but can only find reference to parish registers of births, marriages and deaths.
Thanks

The easiest thing to do is point you to some transcripts of a Banns book

Thank you for that. I now know what I can expect to be looking at on a first visit to the records centre.

Thank you Rod, that was helpful of you. I had been hoping the banns might give a little more information.
What is the likelihood of the parish register record of a marriage having slightly different information e.g. the father's Christian name, from the marriage certificate? It's probably a long shot I know but it might clear up a mystery for me if I do find a difference.

In theory they should be exactly the same, and probably in 99.99% of cases they are. However ...
I assume that you obtained the marriage certificate through the GRO.
This, even if supplied as a photo-reproduction rather than a rewritten version, is not an actual copy of the original record - look at the "signatures" and you'll see that they are in the same writing as the rest of the certificate.
That's because it is a photo-reproduction of the copy sent into the GRO by the local office, written out by the clerk there.
Clerks are only human, and mistakes can occur. I have one where the fellow evidently couldn't read the writing on the original, so we have a painter/printer mix-up, and another where the bride's middle name is shown as Silyard when the original very clearly says Sulyard.
I wouldn't honestly hold out much hope, but, as a long shot, yes, it's worth checking.
(Personally, I always like to have a copy of the real thing anyway if it isn't going to involve too much hassle, but that's another story!)

Thanks Mythology. Mistakes do happen, and long shot as it might be, I am really hoping this is the case.

As you say Myth a long shot, however, I sent for my mother's & father's marriage certificate a couple of years ago (her second marriage) and she is shown as Anita Elizabeth Imy or Gittins instead of Anita Elizabeth Guy or Gittens.
Her parents names show Guy, so the mistake should have been noticed.
On querying the error I was sent a second certificate in the name of Guy therefore I assume it was a simple mis-transcription.

I have the original of my parents marriage certificate, or rather the certified copy issued to them at the time of the event. Bride's father's name is given as George John Hall but one witness's name is given as John George Hall. In my mother's hand (so we may be sure that it's right) the witness's name is changed (in pencil) to George John Hall.

Thanks for offering up mistakes you have found - it all gives me hope.
The bride's father's death cert has been ordered to see if he changed the profession he is usually allocated on the census. If it has, then that will give us another piece of confirmation that we have the right girl. Then we just have to wait until I get the time to go up to the LMA to check the parish register.
