It is not "missing" in the same sense as the Belgrave part of St George Hanover Square, where an entire sub-district has gone AWOL, but, as with a great number of places, there are odd pages missing here and there.
Just picking a page at random from the St Giles street index ...

Coram Street, Great, is incomplete
Coram Street, Little, is incomplete
Cosmo Place is incomplete
Cross Lane is incomplete
Drury Lane is incomplete
Dunns Alley is missing

No census is anything like complete.

The name indexed 1861 census is available both on ancestry and on 1837online.

It's not a bad principle that if you have trouble finding someone in one index, try another!

If you've already found the family in 1851 and 1871, I doubt if it's worth losing too much sleep about the 1861.

"if you have trouble finding someone in one index, try another!"

Very true.
If you hunt for my Crossfield family in Hackney in 1901 using Ancestry, you don't find them.
If you use TNA/Genes Reunited, you do.

This is not because of poor name transcription - Ancestry have somehow missed one page, RG13/214, folio 5, page 2.
Unfortunately the same does not apply to Cherry Hinton in 1861 where my Smiths have gone AWOL - having checked the film at the FRC, which includes the individual page listing that Ancestry think isn't worth letting you look at, the last three pages of that book are missing, so won't be on anybody's version!

It's also worth noting that the Ancestry transcription - and hence the indexing - is only half baked. 1837 online have a full transcription allowing searches by occupation, marital status, registration district etc. The same advantage applies to TNA 1901 census.

thanks everyone for replying, 1861 is quite important on this family ,because the father died 6 weeks before 71 and i can only find 1 child from 5 in 1871, who has just got married.
if anyone has a spare 1837 online credit could they check out a DANIEL GRIFFITH , GROCER , BORN C.1804 BRISTOL , living in westminster, waterloo area for me.
I cannot use 1837 as my puter will not download the images and i have wasted buckets already trying to get an image
thank you

I have just searched 1837 for you and found nothing :( I could search for the other children if you let me know the details.
