hi everyone, firstly i want to thank you all for all the help you've given me, hope you all dont mind but ive got another question, im now ready to apply for some certificates, can you all let me know where is the best place to apply for them???? should i just apply straight to the general records office? thank you once again, carol

It depends on the infromation you have to apply for the certificates. if you've gone to the trouble of locating references from the GRO index, then I'd suggest using their website http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ their service has improved a lot recently and certificates do arrive in a few working days.

If you have information from family as to when and where someone was born, married or died, then simply apply via the Local or County Registrar. All of the Registrars' Offices that I've contacted have always been very helpful (far more so than the GRO if a certificate cannot be located).

It may be worth adding to Geoffers' good advice that a GRO reference, if you've got one, is of no use at all to local registrar!
