Hi I'm looking for any information on Susannah Hodgson - born abt 1844, Glossop. Married to Gamaliel Pontefract in Ashton under Lyne in 1867. I have a copy of their marriage certificate, but unfortunately I cannot read her fathers name - his profession was a "dresser". Thanks in advance

One online source on old occupations defines it as someone who is "a surgeon's assistant in a hospital", another as that or an "operator who assembled yarns or threads prior to weaving of cloth; assistant to a noble person preparing clothes etc." or, in an iron foundry, "the person who removed the flash and unwanted bits from castings".

Any idea which of these Susannah's father might have been? The answer may help you track down the family in the 1851 or 1861 census...

At a quick scan, I don't see a Susannah HODGSON born about 1844 in Glossop showing up in either census but that could be because she's listed under a variation of HODGSON.

I think she is mis-transcribed as Hooder in the 1861 census index, but is actually recorded as Hodson.

Next door is John Hodson 50, Dresser Cotton Mill, born Dukinfield Cheshire & family.

Just to update, I managed to find susannah, yes with a lot of varients on hodgson, thanks again for your help
