My gandmother's Uncle sailed for the Boer war the night before she born 16 February 1900. His name was Joseph Thompson and she was named Josephine after him. He had a daughter born 1899, so I thought if I got her birth registration it would tell me his Regiment and Rank - no luck he hadn't signed up yet and was listed as a sawyer and woodworker!
How would I find out more about him? There are several Joseph Thompsons on Kevin Aspinal's site, i don't know how to tell them apart. I think he survived and came home after the war. I have him on the 1891 in Lancashire and in 1901 his wife and daughter are back with her parents, no sign of him.

Any thought or suggestions gratefully received!

Hello
The records are available, but not easy to access from Prince Edward Island.

The record of his service is most likely to be held in the Soldiers' Documents at Tha National Archives (TNA) at Kew. They will be in document class WO97. You should be able to idenfity whichy is your Joseph Thompson as you have a rough year and place of birth from the 1891 census. Records of British Auxilliary Forces and some of the City Imperial Volunteers are at the Guildhall Library, London. Imperial Yeomanry Soldiers' Documents are also at TNA in WO128.

Also at TNA are the medal rolls for the South African War in document class WO100.

You cannot access either of these on the web, you have to either go to Kew personally, hire a professional, or know a helpful person who is willing to look up the records for you.

Thanks very much for this!

I was more than a little suspicious that I would not be able to find this out on the web, but it's nice to know exactly what I have to look for now.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
