Please could someone advise me about how and where one obtains an Irish Will?

We are looking for a copy of the Will of Winspeare Toye Hungerford who died in Cork (we think) in 1905. We have seen the Will and were promised a copy of it but, as this hasn't been forthcoming, we need to re-invent the wheel and obtain a further copy for ourselves!

Any help or advice would be appreciated. I'm also unsure how to go about obtaining BMD certificates from Ireland, so advice about those too would be helpful!

Hi Lindad,

BMDs
If you know all the details (or enough to narrow it down) you can order copies of certificates here
http://www.groireland.ie/about_us.htm

but there is no index available online for BMDs as they are still in a manual format. No decision has yet been made as to when or even if they will be made available online, although they are being computerised. You would have to go to the GRO in Dublin and search the index yourself (or employ a researcher to do it for you).

Wills
Records of original wills lodged in the Principal Registry since 1904 are held in the National Archives of Ireland, Dublin and details can be found here:
http://www.nationalarchives.ie/index.html

More specific details of requesting copies of wills can be found here:
http://www.nationalarchives.ie/services/public/repro2.htm

As far as I know you can order only by post.

Hope this will be of some use to you

Best wishes

Brenda

You don't have to go to Dublin to do the search. You could go to the Hyde Park Family History Centre and look at a microfilm, for example if it is Irish births 1864-1955 you are interested in, details are here http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=titledetails&titleno=452818&disp=Quarterly+returns+of+births+in+Ireland%2%20%2 0&columns=*,0,0
