My GGrandfather was a Coast Guard. I have just got his naval service record from the Archives. It has reference to Training ship Excellent, the Druid, and the Penelope, all of which I have managed to locate details about. However, he has 2 references to 'Haven Hole' firstly from a period 1st May 1897, (difficult to real the correct line of entry) and later 1st Oct 1888 to 7th May 1889 from which he was promoted.
According to the '81 census, he was a Coast Guard at Kessingland, Suffolk, in 1891 he was at Reculvers, and 1901 he was the Chief Officer at Herne Bay, so I am at a loss to understand where Haven hole fits in. I've tried checking ships names on a few sites, but I have not found any other reference to it. Can anyone clarify exactly what or where Haven Hole was?
His name was George Henry Barton, born 1850 Ryde, IOW.

Hi Sandra

I believe what you are looking for is the Hole Haven Station on Canvey Island. Try Canvey Island's History in Words and Pictures at http://www.canveyislandhistory.com/history.htm and go to "In and around the Lobster Smack Inn".

Hi Peter,

Thank you very much for that. It certainly fits the bill, and there's an active forum based there which may be able to fill in a bit more detail.
