I have just received a birth certificate from the GRO for a G.Grandmother born in 1862. But the details of my G.G.Grandmother need some clarification.

In field 5 - Name, surname and maiden surname of mother, it states:

'Sarah McKend late Lodgson formerly White'

I am interpreting this as born Sarah White, then married a Mr Lodgson who subsequently died leaving Sarah a widow, who then re-married John McKend and became Sarah McKend who subsequently gave birth to my G.Grandmother, also named Sarah McKend, but from birth.

Can anyone knowledgable in these matters please confirm if my understanding is correct?

Many thanks.

This is in response to Terry Fossey's enquiry regarding Sarah (White) McKend.

My Great Grandfather's parents were John McKend & Sarah White. Their marriage certificate & the birth certificate of their first child, George, my Great Grandfather, identify Sarah as the widow of "Dodgson", although one entry could be misread as "Lodgson". Sarah came to this 2nd ?? marriage with a son, Edwin, White (surname block left blank), & to-date I have not determined if Edwin was ever adopted. However, as an adult in Canada, he was known as Edwin White McKend. He is still a bit of a mystery.

John McKend & Sarah (White) (Dodgson) McKend appear to have had 10 children. Among them:

George (born 23 Aug 1859, at Upper Holker, Cartmel, Lancs),

John (born 1861, 3rd qtr. at Upper Holker, Ulvertone, Lancs.),

Sarah (born 28 Oct 1862, Upper Holker, Cartmel, Lancs)

& later on, another John (born 1876, 1st qtr, Holme, Kendal, Westmorland).

The last child born appears to have been Henry Lawrence McKend (born 1880, 3rd qtr., at Holme, Kirkby-Lonsdale, Kendal). I have been able to follow Henry L. to Wakefield & a marriage to Lily Slack, 16 July 1904.

Your Great Grandmother, Sarah McKend, married Philip Fossey 20 Aug 1881 at Holy Trinity Church, Holme, Westmorland. Philip was boarding at the time in the McKend home in Holme.

George McKend married Eliza Jane Black 10 July 1886, at Holy Trinity Church, Holme, Westmorland. They emmigrated to Canada about 1888, about one year after the birth of my Grandfather, Thomas McKend, & here we are to this day.

Great Great Grandfather, John McKend, was reportedly born in Scotland. I'm still trying to find out where the family originated from in Scotland....without any luck to this date.

I hope that some of this info. is of use to you. It appears that we fall somewhere into the category of "cousins" !!?

If you are looking for additional info I would be glad to help if possible & I would like very much to hear from you. My email address is

Hi George,

Thanks for posting the details of your family (and mine). I guess we are in a similar age group as we share G.G.Grandparents.

Philip Fossey married Sarah McKend in Holme in 1881 as you say, and then they went on to produce 8 children. From Holme they moved to Lancaster, then Manchester and finally to Wakefiled around 1895 where Philip died in Oct 1899. The last child was also named Philip Fossey as he was born in May 1900, some 7 months after his father's death. This Philip was my Grandfather and went on to marry May Cooper in Wakefiled in 1922 and had 3 children (Mavis, Marjory and Eric). Eric Fossey is my father and my family still live in the Wakefield area today, though I have not lived there for many years myself.

Perhaps Philip and Sarah were also the reason that Henry Lawrence McKend moved to Wakefiled around this time?

I will be glad to share research with you and I will email you with my contact details.

Best regards,

Terry Fossey

Just looking through old messages, and I found this thread. You stated:

"Great Great Grandfather, John McKend, was reportedly born in Scotland. I'm still trying to find out where the family originated from in Scotland....without any luck to this date."

The 1861 census lists John's place of birth as Annan, Dumfries-shire, Scotland. Also living with him and Sarah and their children are Robert McKend, a traveller, and John's sister Ellen McKend. Both Robert (40) and Ellen (20) were born in Dumfries (Ellen specifically in Annan).
