View Full Version : Trying to trace a 'Mariner'

I've also posted in the 'Beginners' forum, but maybe someone here can help :)

I've got the marriage cert for a James Young Hancock which states his occupation as 'Mariner'. This was in 1846.

I'm trying to find him (if poss) on the 1841 census but not sure where to start looking. I know that at the time of the marriage he lived in Wapping, in East London. From his death certificate in 1848 I have estimated that he was born in about 1822, which would make him 19 in 1841.

At the time of his death he was no longer a mariner, but was now a fireman.

The only other thing I know about him so far is that his father's name was Edward Thomas Frederick Hancock, who was a Baker.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Jane
