This link on TNA's web-site is a research guide for finding British Army records
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=23
It will give you some useful information. Service records are not online. Other threads on this forum also give advice.

The index to Natal and South African Forcecs Deaths is online at 1837 online using a reference found there, you can order a copy of the death certificate from the GRO.

Lastly, you do need to remember that the word is Boer (from the Dutch, meaning a farmer) rather than Boar (a large procine quadruped that you wouldn't want to meet in a wood on a dark night); 'tis a minor point, but if searching for any information on the internet - I doubt you'll find much useful with the wrong spelling.

Hi deltauk

You can exclude him from the Imperial Yeomanry. I've just checked the medal rolls for the 2nd Boer War and he doesnt appear in the list.

Hi!
I am a South African and my great grandfathers fought in the boer war;on the boer side. My grandmother was born in a English concentration camp. There is a lot of articles and information about this topic available in South African. You can try to send an email to the following News Paper in South Africa and ask them to assist you. Hope you get some information! I have always felt sad when I saw the graves of the Englishmen who died in that war ( there were some in my hometown) and wondered if they have any family in England who are still thinking about them!
Greetings

Hi,
I have a copy of the Boer War casualty rolls. I've had a quick scan through looking for your Joshua Rivers, checking British forces only (NOT colonial or local forces).

In the entire roll there are no exact matches I'm afraid. In fact I could find only 2 matches to the surname Rivers as follows:

3864 Pte W. Rivers, 8th Hussars, died of disease Bloemfontein 1 May 1900

6796 Pte C. Rivers, Volunteer Service Company, Berkshire Regiment, died of disease Glen 26 Nov 1900

You said Joshua was born in Berkshire, so it might be worth looking into. Could he have enlisted using another christian name?

If he's the Berkshire Regt soldier, you may want to search on the Regimental site.

Are you certain that Joshua died in the Boer War? If you look at FreeBMD they have a marriage to either Rhoda Pope or Elizabeth Ann Knight in the Newbury Registration District in 1908. Also listed is a death for a Joshua Rivers aged 29 again in the Newbury Reg. Dist. in 1910. A birth is listed in 1881 in the Bradfield Reg.Dist. Only one Joshua Rivers around at that time according to Ancestry

Hi,
I have a James Debenham in my family line who is recorded as being deceased at the time of his daughter's wedding (Nella b 1872 married in 1895 to Harry Good). James Debenham profession on his daughter
s wedding certificate was recorded as a Quarter Master. Could you please check for me if you have such a person on your casualty records?
Thank you Kindly
Amanda

Hi Amanda,
So he was dead by 1895? If so, Boer War is obviously out. The most likely I think is that he died of natural causes, unrelated to any war.
A quartermaster ranks as an officer, but is traditionally a long-serving soldier who has risen through the ranks before receiving a commission. You could try looking for him in the Army Lists for his time as QM (record all officers in the army), to discover his regiment. That would help. There would only be 1 Quartermaster per battalion, which cuts down the odds of finding him a little!

Hi all,

I has a similar query to those above last May and I contacted the CWGC (Commonwealth War Graves Commission) and this is the reply that I received:

My initial information was incorrect and I didn't have to contact SA afterall, so I have no idea of what details they may be able to provide.

Best wishes

Brenda
