Could some kind person check Gillam Court, Rotherhithe for me? I have this address for a family on a death certificate in 1851 but cannot find this address on Ancestry.

I am looking for a family by the name of TRENCH.

Many thanks for any help.

Staple's Rents shows in the 1872, 1894 & 1914 OS maps. It was between Union Street (Jamaica Road) and Paradise Street. There was a timber yard at the southern end in 1872 and a school in 1914. It has since been built over with Pynfolds (council flats)

Hope this is of help/interest, regards

Have now found Gillam's Court on the 1872 OS map. It ran fom Paradise Street near Millpond Bridge to Rotherhithe Street by the Thames. The houses on the west side backed onto the Millpond, the flour mill being at the Thames end of the street. GC is showing on the 1914 OS but was later built over with the Millstream council estate between the wars.

Howdy,

It appears that your ancestors had all of their children baptised on the same day, 7 January 1863, at Saint Mary Church, Rotherhithe, Southwark, Surrey:

Baptism No. 355, page 45 of church register
Born Nov 5, 1848
Sarah Ann, daughter of
James William & Eady Trench
Abode: 2 Union Ct, Church St
Profession: Shipwright

Baptism No. 356, page 45
Born Jan 13, 1852
Hannah Elizabeth, daughter of
James William & Eady Trench
Abode: 2 Union Ct, Church St
Profession: Shipwright

Baptism No. 357, page 45
Born July 1, 1854
James William, son of
James William & Eady Trench
Abode: 2 Union Ct, Church St
Profession: Shipwright

Baptism No. 358, page 45
Born Apr 14, 1853
William Henry, son of
James William & Eady Trench
Abode: 2 Union Ct, Church St
Profession: Shipwright

Baptism No. 359, page 45
Born Aug 18, 1856
Mary Anne, daughter of
James William & Eady Trench
Abode: 2 Union Ct, Church St
Profession: Shipwright

Baptism No. 360, page 45
Born Aug 2, 1858
Eady, daughter of
James William & Eady Trench
Abode: 2 Union Ct, Church St
Profession: Shipwright

You'll notice I don't have Henry Trench's birth or baptism info (or any other Trench children born before 7 Jan 1863. That's because pages 46 and 47 of the church register are missing from Ancestry.com's online database. Henry's birth & baptism would appear at the very top of page 46.

Checking all the pages for baptisms completed in 1862-1864, I was unable to locate the two missing pages. I even attempted a search for any Henry at this church and couldn't find him. So the original pages were missed entirely in microfilming (otherwise we wouldn't be able to see pages 45 and 48, both of the opposite sides of pages 46 and 47).

Hope this info helps and I will notify Ancestry of the omission.

I am still looking for the marriage of James and Eady as well as the marriage of James Father, William who married a Martha but the info you sent is great - thanks again.

Hi guys,

Not sure if you would be interested, but there is a photo of Staples Rents on the PortCities website.
Although the photo was taken c1935., these building were built much earlier, probably early/mid 1800's
(portcities.org.uk/london/server/show/conMediaFile.6452/Staples-Rents-Paradise-Street-c-1935.html)

Hi Jean

My mums maiden name is Trench and her father, my grandad, lived in Gilliam Court in 1926 when he married my nan. In addition he had his baptisms & wedding at Christchurch, Rotherhithe and his fathers name was Henry James born around 1856.

Not sure if it is connected to your Trench line (lots of Trench's lived in this area & worked on the docks), but would love to hear more from you and what you have found out if you think they maybe connected.

Hello Debbie

I do not have Henry James TRENCH born 1856 in my records. Do you know who his father was?

My direct line is as follows:

James TRENCH born 1795 m Elizabeth PRICHARD
Edith TRENCH born 1830 m James William TRENCH (a cousin?)
Hannah Elizabeth TRENCH born 1852 m Thomas Henry FOREMAN

I haven't listed all the other children. If you have the name of your Henry James' father, I will check if he is descended from any of them.

Best wishes

Jean x
