I wonder if anybody can offer any suggestions as to how I might find out who lived at a given address in Northampton around 1908 - 1910? I have several postcards written from a member of my family, complete with address, but the first name as signed on the postcard doesn't actually match any of the names of the family concerned. I know that members of the family often used their middle names, but I want to confirm who it was that was writing the postcards. Did the electoral roll exist back then as it does now? Did all men have to be included in it? Any other suggestions gratefully received.

You could try the historical directories, though my experience trying to get through to that site recently hasn't been good (I guess they are swamped with hits). The site has searchable directories for the whole of England going up to about 1920, so there should be something covering Northampton for your period.

Thanks for that Geoff, although I have already tried that and the address I was looking for didn't feature :(
