I'm trying to trace a Dr Eric McLeod who moved to Canada years ago. He will be retired now, probably around 75/80 and may have been a Psychiatrist.
I have no idea where in Ontario, so I wonder if there is somewhere "central" online I can go to look him up?
Thanks for any help.

On Canada 411, if full name entered you get 3 living in Ontario. If just "E. McLeod" entered you get 78.

Thanks Linda but that was Plan A so "been there done that" and end up with 3 Eric McLeods in Ont, 673 Goderich(???), St Catharines, Stratford, 411 not showing whether the 3 are/have been doctors. Could have been worse - might have been at least 10! I'm in Scotland so don't feel inclined to get on the phone somehow (yet anyway).
Posted on Forums, Roots Messageboards/mailing Lists, and am now speculating about Plan B, C or whatever. I do thank you for your prompt response.

Thanks JM but how do I tell if they are/were Doctors?

Well you call'em up and ask them. Don't know where you live but if you like I would be willing to contact them for you if long distance is a problem.

jm you're a gem, but have you read my response to Linda? I'm in Scotland so I certainly wouldn't be phoning 70+ numbers. That would be some task even for you assuming you are in Ontario but I don't know that. I know about "local calls" being free but Ontario's not all local is it? Don't Doctors have Dr or something appended to their names over there - maybe MD?

Re "Don't Doctors have Dr ...". Yes they usually do but your Eric may not if he is retired. None of the 78 listed has this honorific listed. I will start with the 3 Erics and move on from there calling the local ones first. The list is not really 78 as some of these listings have full name which is not Eric. Do you have a second name for Eric? That would help to fillter out some of the 78 as well.

I've been in touch with someone this end who says Eric Campbell M.... Great I thought, then ... but it might be MacLeod. Why do we do this? lol
My guess is E C is right and McL also. I can't have this costing you money though - not right. Local (free) is ok but I just wish there was a Register one could look up somehow.
BTW, were you to make contact, the key surnames are Scott and Massie - Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire. He wouldn't know mine as aprt of the family.

Where did he study medicine? If it was in Canada, you could check the medical schools for their alumni - it might give you a place to start. You could see if there's a Canadian registry for phychiatrists, and if he's listed as a member - the medical schools can help you with this, and you can write them. There is an excellent program at the University of Toronto, they can certainly tell you if there is a national registry, and perhaps their archives department can tell you if your chap is an alumni - they get requests like this all the time! For that matter, any decent medical school in your area could check to see if there's a national physician's registry in Canada and tell you how to contact them. Then you have a place to start...

Hi Debbie, I have narrowed it down to Sudbury. Thanks though.
He was already a Doctor when he arrived in Canada. I'm in Scotland, not Canada.
Thanks,

If Sudbury doesn't work out, then go the route of tracking him through the physician's registry. Any decent medical school in Scotland should be able to tell you how to contact the registry in Canada, if one exists. He may also have kept in touch with the medical school from which he graduated - you could check to see with the alumni association. They might have an old address, especially if he was a donor, as many alumni are...

Debbie

Edit: I was referring to a site similar to this one for family physicians, except for phychiatrists:

Hi James, I was thinking that the Sudbury MacLeod looked good. The Canada 411 shows him as E.C. and I found a bursary site where a Dr. Eric C. MacLeod donated money. I was trying to figure at a way to contact this person without the long distance charge you don't want me to incure. Good Luck with Sudbury. Let me know how it turns out. This is the site I found him at. He is in the "Associates ($750 - $999)" http://www.oma.org/pcomm/OMR/jul/02donor.htm
