View Full Version : Died in Manitoba/Winnipeg?
That may not be as bad as some may think.
The clear, blue skies, the sound of a Loon (not that kind) in the distance, the sparkling, blue water, and having a cold beer under the hot summer sun are a very enjoyable way to spend your days.
If your ancestors came and eventually died here, there are three city cemeteries available online to look through.
http://www.winnipeg.ca/ppd/cemetery_search.stm (http://www.winnipeg.ca/ppd/cemetery_search.stm)
If you find someone you are researching and would like a photo of his or her final resting place, let me know and I will go there and take a photo for you.
Please keep in mind that I do have to work and some cemeteries are a little out of my way (Looking for someone in Churchill, 1,700 kilometres, I can not do). I work near the Brookside cemetery and live in Transcona so those are easier to get to. Also the Elmwood cemetery http://www.elmwoodfriends.ca/index.html (http://www.elmwoodfriends.ca/index.html) is very close, but you need to know when someone died, as they are a non-profit organization, with very little resources. Dugald, Oakbank, and Birds Hill are also close by. I work in Morris sometimes

I was wondering if you are near selkirk or Stonewall as my GGG grandfather should be buried around there somewhere. his name was Thomas Lusted there was a street named after him in Stonewall I believe.
Thanks,
Michelle
They are both within driving distance. Do you know where he is buried or when he died? I might be able to find that out for you.
I found this:
Lusted Avenue is a short residential street in North Point Douglas. It was named after early Winnipeg resident Thomas Lusted, who operated a blacksmith shop on McDermot Avenue in the 1870's.
Things are a little wet right now so I would hope to go in May.
There is only one Thomas Lusted in the Manitoba Vital Statistics for deaths:
Last Name: LUSTED
Given Names: THOMAS
Date of Death: 03/12/1904
Place of Death: RM ROCKWOOD
Selkirk and Stonewall both fit in the Rockwood area. If you order the death certificate it will tell you where he is buried.
As luck would have it, I am searching the same area right now for the grave of a distant cousin and if I come across Lusted in the transcriptions I will let you know.
Located in section Q, row 1 of the Stonewall cemetery:
Thomas Lusted Died Mar. 12 1904
Hester Lusted Wife of above Died Aug. 23 1907
Now all that is left is when I can drive up there to take a look. I will let you know.
I should really read my own posts more often. I blame the other members of the forums, they have more interesting things to say than I do.
In case anyone was following this, I drove to Stonewall in June and took several photos of the gravestone of Thomas Lusted and mailed them to MLoewen. For a hundred year old stone it was in very good shape.
Ironically, it turns out that Lusted Avenue is a street I drive by everyday on my way to work, even stopped by a traffic light on the corner most of the time too.

Thanks to your message I have found some names I was looking for but am unsure if they could be ancestors. They are all Laings in Brookside Cemetery.
George Laing - 7753; M-0021-0 died 15 Feb 1916 [the date of death written over his attestation papers was 16.2.1916 if it is the same George].
James Laing - 42545; 24-2050-0; died 26 Nov 1952.
William Laing - 10500; Mlty-01470; died 14 Nov 1918.
William Laing - 18144; 64-0439-0; died 2 March 1928.
William Laing - 45605; D2-1161-0; died 3 Feb 1955
Any of the above could be part of two families I am looking for. I see from the plan that it is a large cemetery and I know it is rather a tall order but if you can manage to have a look sometime I would be very grateful. If parents are named they would be either James Laing and Jane White or John Laing and Elizabeth McRaw.
I can take a look for them and take a photo, hopefully in a few weeks. If you want to know if they are ancestors or not you can try here: http://web2.gov.mb.ca/cca/vital/Query.php
There is no option to order online so you have to mail them the cheque and wait for the certificates.

Thanks for the website. I have had a look and the only one definitely correct is George Laing who died 15.2.1916 as I have found his details on the Commonwealth Graves Commission website so, please, don't go to the bother of looking it up as I have the certificate from the C.G.U.
The W.H. Laing isn't on that website so I expect he must have been a Canadian. George's brothers all served in the C.E.F. and he was the only one who was killed.
The others on my list are all later dates with nothing much to identify them as being part of that family. They originally settled in Prince Albert and I have traced 2 members, George in Manitoba and Henry in B.C. but have had no joy with the others because these years are not yet traceable from here without actual dates.
Thank you anyway for your offer of help. I'll just keep searching off and on and maybe one day I'll be lucky!

Don't put yourself down.....I have had no connection at all but am following the thread - it's interesting - and because I've come to realise in the last 12 months that without people like you and others willing to do a 'bit', none of us could get as far as we probably have...community co-operation at it's best...so THANKS..and let us know other successes (and if I can ever look something up for you in Salisbury UK or nearby....glad to do so).

I heartily agree with HiFly. Anyone who offers their time to help others is fantastic. Over the 3 yrs I have been researching I have had so much help and kindness from many people and hopefully have given something back by helping others a little bit. When we have success after a lead, however small, it is such a great feeling and the email thanks I send to that person never sounds as grateful as I feel!
Thank you both very much. I have received so much help from the forums that I am just trying to give something back.
The members of the forums do so much to help people they do not know. When you are just starting out you have no idea where to look and ask many questions. Everyone here tries to help, they don't ignore your question because you posted in the wrong location or have the wrong information. That is what makes BG so fantastic and keeps me coming back. They are friends, you ask for help and they respond.
So to all the members here, I say
Thank You

Would you like me to take a photo still? It may seem morbid to some, but the way I see it is you research someone from the day they were born, every ten years after that, their marriage, the birth of their children and finally their death. Seeing their final resting place (to me anyway) is just the end of trail.

Thank you. That is really kind and I will take you up on the offer. I have been able to send similar pictures to contacts in Australia as they will never be over to look at them and I suppose it does complete the picture. Just whenever you have time.
I'm in the Scottish Borders so if you ever find you have Scottish ancestors just let me know.
It took a little longer than I thought, but once I got to the right area it wasn't hard.
About ten years ago Brookside did a restoration project of 4684 markers in the field of honor, new markers were placed on any unmarked graves and markers that were broken, chipped or illegable were replaced.
Would you like electronic copy or a hard copy, or both?

Thank you so much for going to all that trouble. An electronic copy would be great.
It is good to hear about the restoration for the field of honour. Recently I was in a graveyard looking for ancestors but most of the stones had fallen face down, therefore were unreadable. It was such a shame, especially as the area was kept clean and tidy.
Thanks to different people this has been a good week or two on the Laing front. I had an old photo of an unknown soldier, put it on a website and he was identified as having been in the Canadian Engineers. Lo and behold, I already had attestation papers for him so that's another piece of the jigsaw.
I'm very grateful for your help.
Rachel
If I remember correctly the grave is towards the center of the cemetary. Nice thing about small towns is the cemetaries are not that large (people live longer is small towns, I guess)
Thank you for getting in touch with me. I like knowing local history and like I said earlier Lusted street is on my way to work. I have to be the only one who drives past there to actually know how it got it's name.
If I can ever find any others for you, please let me know. I enjoy searching.
Jay
I am a little over my seven day edit period, so a reply will work.

Looks like the city has made some changes to its website. Please try this new link:

I'm not sure if Michelle is still around (this is an old thread) but here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/laj2006/3857686430/sizes/l/) is a picture of an entry in the Rockwood History book. It says this house was built by Thomas Lusted prior to 1894 when the Crookshanks bought it.
And here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/laj2006/3856846209/sizes/l/) is a picture of the house today.
My Aunt and Uncle live in that house. It was purchased from the Crookshanks by my grandfather just after the war.

Lloyd, I don't know if Michelle is still around but maybe she'll be googling and run across your post. What a wonderful bit of information for you to post. Hopefully you will remain with us as we don't have many members in Manitoba.
Oh, and by the way|wave| welcome to B-G! I am sure you will have fun reading all the forums :)
Well, a couple of times a year I get PMs wondering if I still take pictures. I thought I would give the post a little bump (I am not a fan of replying to your own post, just thought it might help)
Yes I am still around to take pictures and help in anyway I can to those whose family has come to Manitoba.
Send me a PM and I will help any way I can.
Jay
