hi
i just found my great grandmothers brother's enlistment and war records in the australian national archives .(arthur marriott)
and in the religion section he has signed he is plymouth ? I think it is brethren.
he was born 1870 in aus .
his mother is Caroline Anne Huffer
Birth: 14 Apr 1834 in Ashwell, Hertfordshire
Death: 25 Jan 1916 in Geelong, Victoria, Australia

his father is thomas benjamin marriott born redbourne hertfordshire.

does anyone know if there is/was a branch of plymouth brethren in hertford. and if so how widespread.
always thought the family was C of E.
It is not a common religion in aus that I am aware of so I assume the family brought it with them.
I tried googling but thought maybe someone has come accross them in their lines and would know more details pertaining to localities etc.

"The Plymouth Brethren Movement which started in England,

They may have a list of locations, or you could email them for info, and might have the local history of that religion in the area, as well.

According to this site: http://bacchronicle.homestead.com/14thCentury.html
there was a Plymouth Bretheren meeting house built in Leverstock Green, Hertfordshire...

The only likely candidate I can find for your Thomas Benjamin Marriott is a Thomas Marriott age 2 living with his 27-yr-old widowed mother Martha in the 1851 census in Elstree, Hertfordshire. This Thomas is born in Elstree, and the certificate is from Barnet (of which Elstree is a part), Hertfordshire, Sep qtr 1848 (vol 6 pg 447). Martha is listed as being born in Harpenden, which is part of St. Albans, Hertfordshire, as is Redbourne - the location of birth you have for your Thomas. Her husband may have been the Thomas Marriott that died in Barnet in Sep qtr 1848 (vol 6 pg 335), or possibly the John who died in Luton, Hertfordshire in Dec qtr 1850 (vol 6 pg 76). A John Marriott married possibly Martha Parker Stephens in Sep qtr 1842 (vol 6 pg 653) in Hemel Hempstead, though it seems a long time until the first child was born...

I dont know much about them as I said I thought they were C of E.

seems when you shake a tree you never know who will fall out. seems some families were quakers now I find plymouth brethren. what next.... all adds colour I suppose. strange though no one ever mentioned it.

as to being concientious objectors maybe you didnt have much choice back then ,
28-10-1915 he enlisted as an engineer aged 45 years 4 mnths
20-1-1916 he was sent to england
he was in egypt then france
spent time in hospital ill
1-11-1916 he was remustered as a driver
back in hospital ill in england
13-4-1917 he was sent back to aus from debility
23-10-1917 discharged from army

it is amazing how much detail you get from old war records, physical description and their handwriting.
one other great uncle who was killed in action had several letters from my grandfather and other great aunts and uncles in his file, as well as his physical description.

I never thought to check the national archives till someone on this forum posted a link.
made these rellies seem so real .

There is a marriage for Thomas Marriott to possibly Martha Franklin or Martha Thompson in Jun qtr 1843 (vol 6 pg 119) in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire. Bedfordshire adjoins Hertfordshire...

"I thought Plymouth Brethren were invariably conscientious objectors?????"

So did I, but I found this

"Lieutenant General Sir William Dobbie (July 12, 1879 - 1964) was an officer of the British Army, who served as the military governor of Malta during World War II. Dobbie was a member of the Plymouth Brethren and was a veteran of the Second Boer War and World War I. He was also the former Commandant of the British School of Military Engineering. He was General Officer Commanding Malaya (1935 - 1939)."

(etc.)

Live and learn! :)

this is what I have on the marriotts .....not very much really.
I am unsure if the whole family were plymouth brethren or just their son arthur marriott born 1870 he is one of the youngest of their children I cant find any service records of any other siblings and as he was 45 when he enlisted it is unlikely the older ones would have enlisted.

A GEORGE MARRIOTT MARRIED MARY GEDDES 15 JUNE 1824 AT REDBOURNE 1824

THEY HAD A SON GEORGE MARRIOTT 19 DEC 1824 AT ABBOTS LANGLEY 6.9 K SOUTH OF REDBOURNE.

Do you know if the whole family moved to Australia, or just Thomas? I've looked for some mention of any of them after 1830, but with no success...
