Hi I am looking for any information about a Hugh Vaughan who had two daughters with a Doris Marion Hooper born 1893, Cardiff.
The daughters were christened Joan V Hooper (my grandmother) born in 1925, Llanelly and Doreen V Hooper born in 1926, Cardiff. They grew up in Llanelli so I thought this might be a good place to start!
All the information we have of Hugh Vaughan was given to my Grandmother by word of mouth from her Mother - Doris Marion Hooper. What I do know is that:
a) Doris Marion Hooper was born Jan 25 1893. (confirmed in BDM)
b) When ever Doris talked about Hugh Vaughan she would say he was approx 10 years older than her. Which means he could have been born anywhere between 1883 to 1893 as she was known to have lied about her own age!
c) he was a soldier in the Welch Battalion - possibly a Drill Sergeant.
d) on the birth certificates of her two daughters by him she put their names down as Joan V Hooper - they were both known as Vaughan-Hooper.
e) he was Welsh
f) My grandmother remembers collecting some form of child allowance connected to him. But memories do become blurred esp childhood ones.
g) She also remembers being about 8-9 years old and some children running up to her and singing 'Your Father's dead, Your Father's dead!' (horrible things) and that would have been 1935ish.
Thats it! That's really all I know. I have searched for all Hugh Vaughans and there are about 3-4 when you narrow it down but even they seem a bit impossible....anyone with any family members that this sounds familiar to or if you have come across someone similar it would be lovely tohear from you. I do realise that the name Hugh Vaughan is not a unique name in Wales! So I am really searching for a needle in a hay stack. Wish me luck!
Sarah
