I have a Samuel VALLIS b 1856 (according to 1901 Census - but I suspect that may be wrong) in Thatcham & William VALLIS b 1853 in Newbury and due to their close proximity they may have the some connection....
Thanks - HiFly

Hi
Nothing comes up directly with Vallis for either person. Using Soundex search these two come up which match your birthplace and year of birth (nearly), so don;t know if these are the correct people.
Eliza Valles abt 1828 Oxfordshire, England Wife Thatcham Berkshire
Eliza Valles abt 1850 Peasemore, Berkshire, England Daughter Thatcham Berkshire Samuel Valles abt 1823 Headington, Oxfordshire, England Head Thatcham Berkshire
Samuel Valles abt 1856 Thatcham, Berkshire, England Son Thatcham Berkshire
Edward Tayler abt 1840 Corsley, Wiltshire, England Son Corsley Wiltshire
Isaac Tayler abt 1792 Corsley, Wiltshire, England Head Corsley Wiltshire
Maria Tayler abt 1835 Corsley, Wiltshire, England Daughter Corsley Wiltshire
Sarah Tayler abt 1794 Corsley, Wiltshire, England Wife Corsley Wiltshire

Looking at the original record the Samuel Valles entry looks like Vallis to me. But the William entry is definatly Vallance so don't think this is your chap.

Thanks Awgen -
Samuel info - that was good...and everything matches.
Re William Vallace - actually that I think is also a match as William (as VALLIS) in 1881 is living with his own family in Corsley, Wilts.
So Double Thanks Awgen.

awgen has indeed found the Samuel Vallis listed in the 1901 census as being born abt 1856 in Thatcham, Oxfordshire.
In 1901 he is with wife Annie and 4 children (Harold Robert, Albert Senior, Dorothy Ada, and Winifred Annie) in Downham, Cambridgeshire. He's a 'certificated schoolmaster.'
In 1891 he is with wife Annie, 3 children (Francis S., Harold R., and Albert S.) and his sister Laura in Bradfield, Berkshire. He's a 'schoolmaster'.
In 1881 he is living on his own in Wendover, Buckinghamshire and is a 'schoolmaster & organist.'
In 1871 he is living with his widowed mother and 4 siblings (Eliza, Albert, Ada, and Laura) in Headington, Oxfordshire. He is a 'pupil teacher' while his mother Eliza is a 'National Schoolmistress' apparently at a 'parochial school.'
And in 1861, as awgen mentioned, he is living with both parents (Samuel and Eliza) and his sister Eliza in Thatcham, Berkshire. Samuel, Sr. is a 'Schoolmaster National School'
