As part of Nattional Library Week we can access the Times Digital Archive for FREE
http://trials.galegroup.com/nlw2006/history.html (http://trials.galegroup.com/nlw2006/history.html)
and all the other databases that are available. We only have the whole of April to do this so make sure you bookmark it and then get searching.

Can anyone explain why searching this archive does not produce the same results as searching Palmers Index ?

Can anyone explain why searching this archive does not produce the same results as searching Palmers Index ? Do you mean that you are getting less results? If so, have you made sure that the radio button is against 'in entire article content' and not the default 'in title, citation, abstract'?
Alternatively, do the dates quoted in
http://edina.ac.uk/times-index/access/OITsublicenceagreementvfinal2004JISC.pdf
give the answer?

Ladkyis, thanks for spotting that :)
Ed, the character recognition isn't always good, especially for early editions of The Times. Therefore, some things appear in Palmers that aren't picked up on in the digital recognition.
You need to be a bit sneaky with your research. I searched for the surname I was interested in. Then for variations using wildcards and the NOT option (so that all the original surname entries didn't come up).
Cheers

What a fantastic database.
Thanks very much for the tip off Ladkyis.
Managed to get some information that I thought would take ages searching for in a library somewhere.

You can also access via Bedfordshire Libraries, they have online membership open to anybody for free, you can even register if you live abroad. For people overseas if your zip code is one character short just insert a space.

Thanks Keith another good tip off.
Just checked my local Online library and able to access this through Waltham Forest, although it looks like you have to live, work or be educated in the area to join this one. They also have a lot of other stuff such as the Encyclopędia Britannica Online etc.

I think you will find, that if you are a member of your local library, you will be able to access the Times Index and various other volumes (I also have access to the Dictionary of National Biography) :)
If you go to your library web site (you can usually get there via your local council site), you should be able to access these indexes, etc., by entering your library card number.
Best wishes

I only found out a couple of weeks ago Glenys, when someone told me they could get access. Like you, I thought "knowing my luck...." but was pleasantly surprised :D
I've just had a look at the Kent Library Service, and think you'll be lucky too http://www.kent.gov.uk/leisure-and-culture/libraries/online-library-services/online-resources.htm

My local library doesn't have access to it, the University of Wales, Newport Campus does but they are probably not going to let me play with their puters cos I am not a student.

To LADKYIS,
I used to be able to get on to the web site for The Times by using a password. At first it was "TRIAL" and then it changed to "TEST". That was over a year ago. I got no end of information concerning my ancestors who lived in the London Area from Law Courts, Real Estate, Sport to Birth and Marriage notices etc. from 1797 - 1865, then it all shut down and I could no longer access the site. I tried the Web Address you gave, in this post, but it is not the same Site and my old computor does not appear to have the features required, judging by the first page that came up. Do you know what the Site was that I was able to access before, please? and if there is a new password. It was a wealth of information. Best wishes, Betty Willson

Betty, I can't access either entry point this morning, so maybe Gale's got a problem.
Usually, Ladkyis's link does work. You click on it, then on the new page, scroll down and click on "Times Digital Archive" and it opens as before.
Maybe they're doing maintenance, as it's Sunday???

I've accessed the TDA through the link twice this morning with no problems.
This is the direct link to the TDA. http://infotrac.galegroup.com/itw/infomark/0/1/1/purl=rc6_TTDA?sw_aep=nlw2006
See if that works.

Hi , I normally use Firefox as my browser and it will not access this site- so it was back to Internet Explorer (which I keep for occassions such as this) and it works fine- no passwords or anything needed

This is most strange.
I have no problem accessing the site - either via the main link or via the direct "Times" link which Pam gave a few messages back ...
... and, Terry, I'm using Firefox too!

Hmm I am using IE and just clicked on Pam's link and I still got page can not be displayed. More investigation needed here I think.

Well! I do not believe this after Myth posted his message I tried again using Firefox and got through . All very strange, the other day there was no way it would let me in.

:D Isn't it, indeed.
I sometimes think that this museum piece of mine has a mind of its own - strange things happen on perfectly normal sites, then ten minutes later, without me doing anything, it's OK again!
Betty - if you're still with us, just to clarify one thing ...
"Do you know what the Site was that I was able to access before, please? and if there is a new password."
This *is* the same site - they make it free to access about once a year when it's National Library Week in the States - it's just been redesigned since last year.

Well, I still can't access the site :)
Maybe it's just been overwhelmed, and I just try at busy times?
I'll keep trying...

Sometimes I think that once you try and get the "can't do it" page then you have to go offline and then come back on and it thinks it is a new day and works just fine.

Most times when you get this problem, its the cache, if IE is having a problem, it loads the last version of the page thats in the cache.
Clear the cache and all will work, or it should.

Strangely, I'd already cleared the cache twice today, and it still hadn't worked...
I read your post. Did it again - and I got the page!?!
So, thank you :)
