I am researching my great (x3) grandfather Philip Levy (or Hebrew name Yehudah Eliezer LEVI) who was transported to Tasmania (VDL) aboard the Surrey (2). Tried at the Surrey Assizes 15 June 1829. Prisoner number 478.
I can not locate him on the Ratcliffe Highway which is where he stated he was from a shoemaker (womens) and "a jew". He was prominent in the jewish community in Hobart and recently a friend translated his name from the Synnagogue Records. So
Where do go to now to locate his Assizes Records, his Jewish Registry in the area? I believe the Ratcliffe Highway ran from Shadwell high Street, Stepney to Middlesex and was an extremely questionable part of town in the 1820's. He had come before the magistrate before. But he is NOT the Philip LEVY who appears in Old Bailey Records, I have the Surrey (2) convicts of which he was.
Cheers
