What did a Cox Pin do?

My GtGt Grandfather served aboard HMS Indus and he's noted in the Census as being a Cox Pin. I've searched for hours for information and can't find any explanation.

Would someone be able to shed some light for me please?

If this is from a transcription, could the original really be Cox'n (short for Coxswain)?

It is from a transcription Lynda, and your answer sounds possible. It could also be the answer to why I haven't been able to find him in any of the ADM searches.... I've been searching for Ratings. Thanks for your help.
