Events of historical interest
1580
Matthew Wentworth of Bretton Hall appeared before the Earl of Huntingdon, Archbishop Sandys and other commissioners and was put under bond to go to Church to receive the sacrament and to apprehend Romish priests. Matthew's 'victims' included John Bretton, who was married to Matthew's niece, Frances Wentworth. These people were known as "recusants" who refused to conform to the Established Church and, in the case of John and Frances, they were referred to as the most notorious recusants in the north of England.

John Bretton kept away from Bretton for many years so that he could avoid arrest, but he kept in close contact with his family there. He was finally caught, however, and jailed in Manchester, all his lands and properties being seized and returned to the Exchequer. On 1st April 1598 John Bretton was accused of sedition against Queen Elizabeth I, sentenced to death and executed at York the following day.

Unfortunately, John BRETTON was not one of my Ancestors (I'm really envious!) but my Grandma's sister married a Descendant of his. ;)
