Please could anyone help me find Thomas Stocker born about 1723.
He married Elizabeth Bass on 23 Mar 1752 Holy Trinity Exeter and had a daughter Elizabeth Stocker who later married Henry Atwill 1 Apr 1773 in Stoke Damerel.
His second marraige was to Catherine Gibbs 9 Dec 1761 Stoke Damerel and they had a son together Thomas Stocker 1766/7
They were devout Methodists so I most records of their children don't exist in the normal parishes.
My only clue to Thomas is from his marriage to Elizabeth Bass. Would the record tell me which parish they both came from? That would at least give me a parish to begin looking for his birth.
Thank you in advance
Rachel

Hi Rachel

Nothing concrete for you I'm afraid but I can remember coming across the name Stocker mentioned a few times in both St Austell, Cornwall and Cullompton, Devon searches. Apparently there were a large number of Stockers in both areas. I noticed the name as I lived a few yards away from John Stocker middle school in Exeter and it caught my eye...... there's also a Stocker Road in Exeter. From what I remember there was a mention that Stockers still live in Cullompton.

Thanks for replying Karina,
That is interesting - it means that there were Stockers in Exeter so I can base my search there.
Now to hit the parish records.
Would anyone know whether you can get a birth printout from DFHS that far back 1723?

A http://www.a2a.org.uk/ holds catalogues describing the archives held from parish records.

A bit of info on John Stocker School for you..... it's in the St Thomas area of Exeter just off Buddle Lane and Cowick Street. A look at an Exeter History site or Book may give you a bit of back ground about the schools origins.
