my g.g.g. grandfather died of smallpox in the manchester workhouse in 1872,
from the information i can find there was an epidemic at this time, i can't find any details on where the burials took place or would it have been left to the families to arrange.

Carrie, I don't know about the Manchester area, but in Kent where I live, I have come across various people dying of smallpox, in the local parish records. They appear to be buried at the local churchyards, so do you know where the Workhouse was situated in Manchester? It's worth looking for a churchyard nearby.

However, I don't know what would happen in an epidemic of large proportions. The ones I have found seem to be of a couple of families.

Hope that helps.

Does the workhouse have its own death register, recording where the burial took place?

A catalogue of Workhouse records for Manchester can be seen at a2a. There were (eventually) three Poor Law Unions in Manchester...Manchester Union, Chorlton Union and Prestwich. A little bit confusing. Very briefly, Manchester Union was based at Crumpsall and Prestwich Union was next door to it. the Chorlton Union was based at Withington. If it is Crumpsall or Prestwich that you are looking at...don't hold your breath;) . The records for Withington are quite good.

I had a look in the PRs for Church closest to New bridge Street to see if he was buried there...sadly not. where was he living prior to being in the Infirmary?
