Hello,

I am very new at this and request some help if there's any available.

Through some kind assistance from various people I have managed to find some valuable information relating to the second marriage of my grandmother who moved to Ashby de la Zouche sometime around 1925.

She married a John G Nixon of Burton in 1930 and we think that they had 5 children named Marcus, Clifford, Terence, Elaine and Sylvia.

I was hoping that someone might point me in the right direction in tracing any or all of the children seeing as the parents are likely to be deceased now.

I have limited information relating to their births but nothing else. I have searched Ancestry.co.uk but had no joy and even phoned all the Nixons who live in the Burton area whose numbers appear in the phone book. I guess it's quite possible that they may all have moved out of the area and now I don't know where to redirect my efforts.

I'm hoping to make contact with a living relative who can help me fill in all the blanks regarding my grandmother's life.

Thanks

1 - Family History Societies have lists of surnames being researched, most/all are online and can be found using a search engine. You might get lucky.

2 - From the marriage, you have a rough year of birth - search the GRO index of deaths to trace when they died. For deaths since 1984, The Genealogist has a searchable database created from the GRO index. This site and also 1837online have the complete GRO index online, deaths prior to 1984 have to be searched chronologically. The death index includes either an age, or date of birth.

3 - If you can locate a death which may match - search the index to wills. This has been copied onto microfilm and can be seen at many county record offices/local studies libraries. The index includes sufficient detail to identify individuals. If you find a will listed, apply for a copy - depending on when the person died, you may find fairly recent addresses - try writing to the address in case the family member still lives there.

4 - Search the GRO marriage index for the children - to see if you can find when they married. The index will include the surname of the spouse. Come forward in time to trace the births of children. The birth index includes the mother's maiden name for the period of your interest so you should be able to pick out the correct entries. With the names of the children, come forward in time and look for their marriage in the GRO index - again the spouse's surname will be included - try looking for those with unusual forenames or combinations of unsual names to begin with, there will be fewer called Arbuthnot Aloysius than there are simply called John

5. If you can tie someone down to an area in the last 10 years, then try using old telephone books, electoral returns stuff like that - 192.com may help with this.
