Do you know when and where he married Caroline?
Do you know the names of any children??
Have you checked the 1841 or 1851 census records?
What was John's occupation?
We need more info to be able to help you.

Theres no John Sargent in Devon in 1851 census.
There are a few Caroline Sargents in Devon in 1851.

One of them was born in Cornwall and married to Digory W. SArgent (also born in Cornwall apprx 1815) in the 1851 census. They were living in Charles MArtyr parish in Plymouth and had the following kids - George, Alfred, Caroline & Frances.
HO/107/1878 F470 P 51

Does this help?

The Devon Family History Society has published a CD "The Deanery of the Three Towns" which contains ,Baptisms 1813 to 1840, marriages 1754 to 1837 and burials 1813 to 1837. The parishes covered are East Stonehouse, Pennycross, Plymouth Charles the Martyr, Plymouth St Andrew, Stoke Damerel.
This last parish covers Devonport, and from the CD I have found the following

19th September 1813
SARGENT, JOHN child of WILLIAM & ELIZABETH, fathers occupation- LABOURER address-DOCK.
