Can anyone please tell me about Cobblers city, which I understand was a workhouse in Woodley, and how I might look at their records?

Thank you,

Sue

I used to live in the area and I feel as if I ought to know the answer but I have to confess my ignorance.

So far as I know, there wasn't a Union workhouse in the Woodley area. Perhaps an earlier parish workhouse? Trouble is, when you go back a bit, Woodley barely existed. I only know of Cobblers City as a hamlet in that area.

Unless someone else can come up with an answer, I can only suggest that you ask Berkshire Record Office - someone there ought to know (although not necessarily the person answering the phone!). If the place existed and if any records survived, that's where they are likely to be.

There is a mention of the Woodley and Sandford Parish Workhouse (for up to 50 inmates) at

http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/Wokingham/Wokingham.shtml

It existed up until 1834, after that it came under the Wokingham Poor Law Union.
There may also be something on the Hurst website http://history.hvs.org.uk
