I am try to trace the parents of Austin Williams he was born Ashey Toll Gate near Ryde 26/6/1839. His parents were James Williams carpenter and Jane Williams formely Austin. I have managed to trace Austin from 1861 until his death in 1901. However I cannot find him either on his own or with them on the 1851 census. Can anyone help me.
thanks
marion
I couldn't find Austin Williams in the 1841 census of Hampshire, so had a look at the 1881 and found he was in London (as you, no doubt, already know :) )
So, I looked at the 1841 for London and found -
HO107/732/8 Folio 29 Page 21
Westminster St George Hanover Square
James Williams - 30 - Carpenter - N
Jane do - N
Phoebe do - N
Fanny do - N
Austin do - N
Hope that helps

thanks so much for your help. I rather new to this so please bear with me. Does the 1841 census give the ages of the children and also does it show where James and Jane where born.
Thanks again
Maz
Sorry Maz - I was in a bit of a hurry yesterday and forgot to put the ages :o I must learn to think before I type......
James Williams - 30
Jane do - 25
Phoebe do - 5
Fanny do - 5
Austin do - 1
In the 1841 census, the only indication at to where a person was born was Y (or Yes) for 'born in county', ie the county where the census was taken, or N (or No) meaning the person was born in another county to where the census was being taken. If the person was born abroad, it will say F (Foreign), Scotland is denoted with an S and Ireland with an I.
For a very good explanation of the census records and what you can expect to find on each one , take a look at family records
Best wishes

Thanks for all your help. I have now been able to find Austin in 1851 and guess what he was back on the Isle of Wight.
Maz
