I am looking for an Edred William Hawken who was an Auctioneer and had two children born in Leamington in the late 1880's. Could someone suggest a trade directory for the area that I might consult? He was born 1858 in St Ervan Cornwall and one of the children born 1887 was named Florence or Florian Mabel.I would be most greatful for assistance on this for an elderly friend

Kelly's Directory of Devon & Cornwall, 1893 lists the following on page 1090:

St. Ervan
-- Hawken Henry, farmer, Tremouth
-- Hawken James, auctioneer & farmer, Pantruse
-- Hawken Thomas, farmer, Treglinick

This matches up with Edred HAWKEN's father in the 1881 and 1861 censuses...

Thank you so much Trish. |hug| I did have all the Cornwall bits(except 1891) as did Errol. It was the out of county we had not got. I was hoping he appeared in a trade directory in Leamington but I see he was a Clerk in 1891 so it is unlikely. I did not have the 1891 bits as I had not completed my data entry for that though I think Errol had. We are lucky to have all that for free on line in Cornwall because of Freecens. It just takes me time to enter for over 116,000 souls :D

You're most welcome, Scottie. I thought you would most likely have Cornwall covered.

Have you gone through the Historical Directories site? There doesn't seem to be anything there for 1890s Leamington but I may have missed something...

There are only a handful of HAWKENs popping up in Warwickshire in 1891 -- including a William HAWKEN, 34 years old, born in Camelford, who is living in Leamington. He's with his Devon-born wife and two young sons. His occupation is "General Fancy Draper". [RG12/2472 Folio 33 Page 20]

That is interesting Trish. I did not have him. I will have to find out who he is. Must be related somehow to the other Hawkens in the area. Maybe Errol will know. :) I am going to get him to take a look at the Forum. I think he would enjoy the banter here.

Ah yes I found him and his Father was a draper from Michaelstow so not one of mine :D

Edred Hawken was my great great grand father, florian Mabel hawken was my great grand mother. I have a book about St Ervan which suggests that the Hawkens owned alot of the St Ervan area in the 19th century. Unfortunately I believe that edred and his wife both died in the Bodmin workhouse at the turn of the century. I never knew my great grand mother (florian Mabel) but I do remember meeting her brother (Arthur Leslie hawken) many times on family holidays (staying with my great aunts, florian Mabel's daughters, Dorothy & Mildred) as a child in the penrose, st Ervan & st merryn area. From memory he had turned his fortunes round and at one stage owned the Cornish arms pub in st merryn. Happy days, Barry

Hi Barry,

Unfortunately Scottie who started this thread is no longer a member of the forum and will probably not see your response.
