Can anyone advise me please? I'm planning my first trip to one of the LDS Family History Centres - and am a little taken aback to find that they only open for two hours each day (at least at the one I'm planning to visit!) I therefore need to make the most of the two hours. I need to order the microfiche sliHistory Centres - and am a little taken aback to find that they only open for two hours each day (at least at the one I'm planning to visit!) I therefore need to make the most of the two hours. I need to order the microfiche slides that I want to view in advance and, as each one costs 15p, I need to try and make sure I get the order right!

When I go to Kew, I sit at the microfiche screens for a lot longer than 2 hours...=es that I want to view in advance and, as each one costs 15p, I need to try and make sure I get the order right!

Can anyone tell me what information each LDS slide contains? Are they done in name order by the QTR (ie. as at Kew)?

I am not sure if I understand your question but here goes.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) family history centres are manned by volunteers who may or may not be members of the LDS church. The opening times are determined by the availability of these volunteers.

When ordering microfiche or microfilm to viewed at a FHC the patron pays a nominal fee (this normally works out at about the cost of postage from Samessage=I am not sure if I understand your question but here goes.

When ordering microfiche or microfilm to viewed at a FHC the patron pays a nominal fee (this normally works out at about the cost of postage from Salt Lake City) if a microfiche is ordered it remains the property of that FHC if a film it is returned after three months, but may be retained longer if required.

It is only necassary to order fiche or film if the particular FHC does not already hold a copy. (i.e. out of area fiche).
I assume, but may be wrong, that you wish to view the General Register Office GRO index, often still called the St. Catherines index at family history centres, if so the FHC will possibly have their own copy already.
The GRO index at libraries, archives and FHC is the same as that at the National Archives (Public Record Office ) Kew.

Sorry for the confusion. No, it isn't the GRO records I'm after... I can view those at Kew or online. It is the Irish records which apparently they can get. I'm just not sure whether these still appear by name and QTR.

ie. I'm looking for the birth of a Hungerford who was born in 1865. Would I need to order the 'H' fiches for September and December 1864, the March, June, September, December 1865 and March and June 1866 to be on the safe side - or do their Irish records come in a completely different format???

Look at the Family History Library Catalogue (online). The Irish records are not on fiche - they're on microfilm. 1864, 1865, 1866 births are on films (British) 101041, 101042 and 101043 respectively.

A quick search of the LDS catalogue for - irish records - gives 1309 matching titles
http://tinyurl.com/46b3z
Changing the search to - irish births - gives 9 matching titles

Clicking the third link
General index of births, marriages and deaths registered in Saorstát Éireann [Irish Free State], 1922-1958 Ireland. General Register Office
gives a further page which if you click on authors gives

It seems all of these records are on film rather than fiche, but the quarterly returns would seem to contain those you are searching for.
You would have to narrow the search from 1031 films down to just the single film you require, but the helpers at the fhc would aid you with this if necessary.

It might be worth asking your local FHC whether any neighbouring centre has its own copies of the Irish registers, and possibly opens at more convenient hours for you. Try in one of the areas of London with a high population of Irish descendents.

Our local one has one 2 hour evening opening and often it is fully booked (plus one for church members, which is often undersubscribed). So I too have to try and make best use of that time.

Have to echo the point made by several others, the volunteers at these centres are (mainly) very knowledgeable and helpful in the field of genealogy. Long may the keep up the good work!

I've just noticed you say you're in SW London. It may be a lot simpler if you can make it to central London and go to the big FHC in Kensington where you won't find the same restrictions, be more likely to find staff who know what they're talking about and there's also a fighting chance they might even have the records you want on tap.

Hi Peter

Thanks for your help. Yes, this had occured to me and I think that is probably what we will need to do. I will be looking for these records with my cousin... it's his great grandfather that we're trying to mind - not mine! Never having used the LDS centres before, in our inncocent ignorance we'd thought it would be nicer for me to have a day down in Sussex than for him to have a day in London...

Hmmm... that's interesting. These posts are adding all sorts of things all of their own accord...
